West Arlington is a rural area turned thriving suburban landscape
Originally farmland settled in the 1700s, West Arlington tells a long tale of growth. It was in the 1800s that the neighborhood developed from its rural roots into the suburban space it became, a situation solidified by the construction of the well-known water tower that still stands tall. While no longer in use, the West Arlington landmark serves as a reminder of how the neighborhood has flourished over the years.
Fully restored vintage homes and investment opportunities
Located 2 miles from the county border and 8 miles from downtown Baltimore, the neighborhood features a variety of detached homes in a suburban setting. Home styles range from colonial to Cape Cod, with no two houses appearing alike. With the neighborhood’s inception dating back to the 1890s, it comes as no surprise that architectural styles vary based on the phase of growth in which they were constructed. “They have different floor plans and architecture,” explains Marcia Midgett, an agent with The Agency Maryland. “The area typically has larger homes and larger row homes because when originally built, that was your sign of wealth.” House sizes range from 1,000 square feet to 4,000 square feet, and some homes incorporate unique elements like spires, dormer windows and bay windows.
Turnkey homes range from $220,000 to $275,000, though homes sold as-is offer a lower price point and opportunity for customization. “For some people, they might get a house that needs TLC and start revitalization and start that transition from eye sore,” says Midgett. “You can shine the diamond back up,” Midgett says. If building up sweat equity is a better fit, find homes in need of renovation for about $135,000 to $185,000.
Local schools offer updated buildings and tech-rich classrooms
Students in the neighborhood begin their education at Calvin M. Rodwell Elementary/Middle, recently rebuilt to provide a more technologically rich school with ample natural light. For high school, students choose where to attend. The closest option is Forest Park High School. Also boasting recent renovations, Forest Park gives students access to computers in every classroom, improved libraries, and collaborative learning spaces.
Playing sports and tossing horseshoes at Penhurst Park
Toss a football with friends or watch the sunset as you lie back in the grass at Penhurst Park, a tree-lined field with an accompanying playground located only blocks away from the West Arlington Water Tower. The park also includes a horseshoe pit whenever you want to brush up on your skills or score a ringer.
Shopping centers offer essentials and dining within 2 miles
When it’s time to knock some errands off the list, run to Northwest Plaza to grab groceries at Harvest Fare Supermarket or pick up prescriptions at Rite Aid Pharmacy. For a broader selection of stores, drive less than 2 miles to Reisterstown Road Plaza. The shopping center consists of national retailers like Home Depot, Planet Fitness, Five Below, Giant Food, and Burlington, and there are fast food options surrounding the shops for convenient grab-and-go meals like Checkers, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s. If you want to dine in, grab a booth at Applebee’s, also located within the same parking lot.
Bus and metro connect West Arlington to downtown Baltimore
Public transit connecting the neighborhood to the heart of Baltimore dates back to the 20th-century streetcar lines. Though you won’t be jumping on a streetcar to head downtown, the bus and subway provide the access you need. Only half a mile from the Rogers Ave Metro, West Arlington makes it easy to venture deeper into the city or to wander out to Owings Mills.
