Wilson Heights cottage-style homes and brick duplexes
“There’s a nice mix of housing stock, whether it be single family, duplexes or rowhomes – as well as prices that are affordable in different income brackets,” Hagerthey says. “But in this market, you may not be able to sleep on it or get a second or third viewing after a few weeks. A reasonably priced house that’s in good condition has the potential to get multiple offers.” Luerssen Avenue separates the single-family homes from a series of brick duplexes and townhouses with shared walls and small stoops. Most have three bedrooms and can cost between $100,000 and $260,000, though it is a competitive area. South of Luerssen Avenue, bungalows with small fenced front yards, cottage-style homes with gambrel roofs and colorful Four Squares line roads like Schley Avenue and Marx Avenue. Though many residents park on the street, some homes have driveways without garages and spacious front porches. For three to five bedrooms, prices can range between $150,000 to $345,000.Herring Run Park trails and playgrounds
Herring Run Park is just west of Wilson Heights and is a long, narrow strip of green woodland and wildlife habitat that cuts through much of the area. “Herring Run Park is a great neighborhood amenity. You feel like you’re out in a rural area out in the woods like a mini vacation,” Hagerthey says. “You’ll see people either walking their dog or biking on the bike paths, and there are playgrounds all around the park for families to enjoy.” There are three playgrounds in the park: Parkside Drive, Brehms Lane and Hall Spring. Each features a play structure, swings and areas for picnicking and relaxing. Residents can also walk or bike around Lake Montebello or play 18 holes of golf at the Clifton Park Golf Course, which was the first public course in Baltimore. Within the boundaries of the course is the Clifton Park Food Forest and community garden.Baltimore City Public Schools’ programs and achievements
Neighborhood students start at Gardenville Elementary, which is near the neighborhood and partners with the Family League of Baltimore and the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. Most students then attend Garrett Heights Elementary Middle School for sixth through eighth grade, which offers a strong core curriculum in STEM, foreign language, arts and music courses. Both schools are graded a C-minus on Niche. The nearest high school is Baltimore City College, graded an A-plus. Students can apply to attend there, and those who do take advantage of its rigorous college-preparatory programs and extensive Fine and Performing Arts Department courses. The Lauraville Fair and Walther Gardens and Nursery
For almost 40 years, every September, the Lauraville Fair has hosted a massive one-day party at the Lauraville Fairgrounds on Harford Road. With dozens of food trucks and tents, artisan vendors, as well as live music and theater performances, locals can spend the day exploring what the fair has to offer. “Every Friday there’s something called First Fridays where a lot of businesses along the Harford Road Corridor will offer discounts so people will frequent the local businesses there,” Hagerthey says. Walther Gardens and Nursery on Walther Avenue is a local staple for seasonal community events and is a go-to spot for choosing a Christmas tree come December.“They’ll have different food vendors out there and various knickknacks. People will walk with their families to go get snowballs there,” Hagerthey says.Commutes downtown and the 82 city bus line
Wilson Heights is about 5 miles away from downtown Baltimore, which locals can reach by driving southwest via Belair Road. Downtown is home to the Johns Hopkins Hospital for emergencies and checkups, as well as the green lawns of Patterson Park. Seventeen miles away via Interstate 895 is the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Because of the neighborhood’s proximity to Belair Road, traffic noise can be prominent during the day, as most locals drive rather than bike or walk around town.Shop and dine along Harford and Belair Roads
Harford Road to the north includes a Safeway grocery store as well as little restaurants like Maggie’s Farm, which serves farm-to-table breakfast and is a popular spot for brunch. They currently source from local farms like Kohl Family Farm and Roseda Farms. Baltimore institution, Zeke’s Coffee, has a roasting facility and its flagship cafe location which also serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Koco's Pub is a local hotspot with a signature cocktail menu in an iconic yellow brick building. “Koco’s is one of the best - if not the best - crab cake places within all of Baltimore,” Hagerthey says. “It’s within walking distance of the neighborhood and is always mentioned as one of the top three spots in the city for crab cakes.” Belair Road to the south offers chains like Aldi for everyday essentials. “Woodlea Bakery on Belair Road is an old-school bakery that’s been there forever,” Hagerthey says. “It’s well-frequented by those in the community and they've got amazing donuts and pastries.” Open every day but Monday, the bakery has been supplying the neighborhood with fresh pies and pastries for 75 years.Historic resting places for Baltimore residents
Two cemeteries border Wilson Heights and are within walking distance of most homes. The Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery nearby is a peaceful resting place for those of the Catholic faith, while the B’nai Israel Cemetery serves the needs of the Jewish community. Both follow their traditional burial methods and guidelines. “There are some people whose yards back up to the cemeteries and they like to sit out there and enjoy the peace and quiet,” Hagerthey says. “Because they’re there, people who live there know there won’t be a lot of development coming in or a new commercial district or a new restaurant.” The Biddison Family Cemetery on nearby Forrester Avenue is a very small plot with about 75 graves. It sits right in the middle of a street median behind a wrought iron fence and showcases several names from the Biddison family who lived and died in the 1700s and 1800s.
