Historic community in Northeast Baltimore
Named after founder Harry Wilson, Wilson Park is an established neighborhood dating back to 1917 and holds historical significance as one of the first African American communities in Baltimore. “There are many black neighborhoods that have been disenfranchised for years. There hasn’t been enough investment in those neighborhoods. If we want to help build wealth in lower-income families and families of color, we need to help people maintain their biggest asset, their homes,” says Bonnie Bessor, the Executive Director of the local non-profit Rebuilding Together Baltimore. Located in Northeast Baltimore, this neighborhood is looking to the future with updated green spaces, renovated homes and a strong sense of community.
Residential streets feature a variety of housing options
Wilson Park features a mix of single-family homes, rowhomes and townhomes. “It’s high-density and older housing stock, usually a mix of brick and wood-frame homes,” Bessor says. Bungalows and Cape Cod-style homes sit side-by-side on modest lots, while rowhomes embrace traditional Baltimore design with red-brick facades and shaded front stoops. “Over the last 10 years, we’ve probably worked with at least 40 households in Wilson Park. We focus on safe and healthy home repairs, which helps stabilize the housing stock and keep long-term residents in the neighborhood while making it attractive to newer homeowners.” Prices range from around $75,000 for a two-bedroom townhome to $300,000 for a three-bedroom bungalow with a spacious front porch.
Detached single family homes in Wilson Park come in a wide variety of styles.
Newly built townhomes feature contemporary trends like neutral colors and symmetrical patterns.

Convenient commute to Washington, D.C. and beyond
Interstate 83 is about 2 miles west of Wilson Park, while an access point to Interstate 95 is about 6 miles south. The thoroughfare makes it easier for residents to traverse the 50 miles south to Washington, D.C. With the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, commutes on the Baltimore Beltway will be impacted. The Maryland Transit Administration provides local bus service to the community, with several stops along York Road – also known as Route 45. Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is 20 miles south.
School choice and proximity to Baltimore’s universities
Students in grades K-5 can walk to the neighborhood’s Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School, which earned a C-minus from Niche. The Baltimore City Public School District follows school choice for middle and high school, meaning that students can apply to attend the schools of their choice. Children can continue their education at Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School before moving to the nearby Reginald F. Lewis High School, also rated a C-minus. Baltimore has nine higher-educational institutions, and residents are minutes from Loyola University Maryland, Morgan State University and Johns Hopkins University.

Wilson Park is primarily residential, but several small businesses and restaurants line the neighborhood’s western border along York Road. The 43rd Flavor Barber & Beauty Salon is a long-standing institution where locals can get a haircut. Dining options include Cool Running Jamaican and American Cuisine, a fusion restaurant specializing in homestyle dishes served by the plate or tray. Locals can also order food to-go from Chicken Run Carry-Out or Ma Wongs Carryout, known for its Chinese food. The House of Chiefs is an intimate jazz club where live music goes late into the evening, and Lidl, a mile east in the Northwood Commons shopping center, is the closest full-service grocery store.

Green spaces include playgrounds, hiking trails and more
Willow Avenue Park features a playground and pavilions. “The park was originally established in the 1980s by community leaders as a space for gatherings and children to play. In 2017, we worked with them to identify the biggest needs in the park,” Bessor says. “The main things we did were repainting and repairing two pavilions that people use for shelter and shade. We also turned the old swimming pool into a mural to brighten it up and installed a community bulletin board.” Wilson Park is less than a mile north of Springfield Woods, a nearly 4-acre urban forest with a series of wooded trails for hikers and dog walkers to explore. Less than a mile west is Sherwood Gardens, a six-acre park known for its flowering trees and annual spring tulip display.
Willow Avenue Park is full of vibrant amenities to liven the Wilson Park Neighborhood.
Springfield Woods has a natural freshwater stream that runs through the entire green space.
