Homes, parks, schools and shopping along Broadway
Located in the heart of Bangor, Broadway is a major road that connects the more commercial northern part of the city to the more residential area just north of downtown. It is around this road that the Broadway neighborhood grew, making daily amenities easily accessible. Here, historic homes line the street of the community just a short walk or drive away from one of the larger parks in the city, several dining and shopping options, as well as a local elementary school. “It's a high foot-traffic area that cuts through the middle of Bangor,” says James Spear, an associate broker with RE/MAX Collaborative who has been serving the area since 2020. “Everything you could want or need is right there along Broadway.”

One of Bangor’s major connectors
Broadway, also known as State Route 15B, is the main thoroughfare for residents, leading them to U.S. Route 2 at the southern end of the neighborhood and Interstate 95 at the northern end. These three roads allow commuting and travel options by car or the Bangor Community Connector bus system. The major roads in and around the neighborhood create some noise and traffic issues for the community, but it is still quiet compared to the hustle and bustle of downtown. The neighborhood’s location also makes the area easily walkable for trips downtown or to the park. "You often see people out walking in the park or just along the streets, whether it's people out walking their dogs or just couples out and about,” Spear says. The neighborhood is home to St. Joseph Hospital, and the Bangor International Airport is less than 4 miles to the west.

Historic Colonial Revivals and New Englanders
The Broadway area offers a number of homes in the neighborhood, with Colonial Revival and New Englander-inspired homes making up a majority of the stock. These homes give a stately feel to the community with historic builds from the 1800s or early 1900s and porches that stretch to the street. “It is lots of more traditional New England-y homes; I can’t think of any modern homes in the neighborhood,” Spear says. Homes are often pushed toward the front of the lots, allowing for more backyard space and porch steps close to the paved sidewalks that line the streets. Two to four-bedroom homes cost between $250,000 and $400,000, and homes with five or more bedrooms commonly range between $550,000 and $700,000.

Broadway Park and community pools
Broadway Park is one of the key features of the neighborhood. It offers a fitness park and a colorful playset connected by walking trails and shaded by local maple trees. Spear says the park hosts a number of events, including outdoor movie nights, school programs, field trips and sports games. Dakin Park, also in the neighborhood, is just a block away and home to a basketball court and the Dakin Pool. The pool has a small slide and changing rooms, and daily passes run about $2 per person.

Local bakeries and casino dining
While Broadway is mainly residential, many dining options are just a short trip away. Frank's Bake Shop is a short walk from the neighborhood and offers fresh baked goods and “donuts the size of your head,” Spear says. “My wife used to go there all the time when she worked at the hospital.” Benjamin’s Pub is also a quick trip from the neighborhood and offers classic pub fare and a pool table. “The owner is typically the one behind the bar there. He’s the man and takes really good care of everyone,” Spear says. Timber Kitchen & Bar is a fancier dining option next to the Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway. It offers a wide range of dishes, from lobster ravioli to surf and turf, along with an extensive cocktail list. Residents can drive north to the Broadway Shopping Center’s Hannaford, a mile from the neighborhood. Additional shopping can be found at the Bangor Mall area, less than 2 miles to the northeast.

Bangor State Fair and event centers
Residents of Broadway are a short trip from downtown events, the largest of which is the Bangor State Fair. The festivities have been a tradition since 1849 and is one of the oldest fairs in the country. It occurs over two weekends in August and is filled with events and activities such as carnival rides, demolition derbies and tractor pulls. Downtown is also home to the Maine Savings Amphitheater, which holds concerts throughout the summer, and the Cross Insurance Center, which hosts monster truck rallies, bull riding and performances from celebrities like Jeff Dunham.
