East Bangor mixes retail, residence and nature
Tucked in the northeastern edge of the city of Bangor, East Bangor blends rural quaintness with modern convenience. The neighborhood features a mix of residential homes, apartment complexes and retail spaces, along with nature preserves and a shopping hub. “Bangor is split up into multiple divisions,” says Karissa Hatch, Recreation Coordinator with Bangor Parks and Recreation. “When you go toward the City Forest area, it’s almost like a business district. You have Target, Walmart and the Bangor Mall, but then you also have these rural areas with larger plots of land and farms around the outskirts. It adds that Maine feature of nature and being surrounded by trees, in a clean environment of the city.” Bangor City Forest is a recreational area with an expanse of trails and a bog walk. While East Bangor offers a quieter lifestyle, its proximity to Interstate 95 and downtown Bangor ensures residents are never far from the action.
City Forest offers hiking trails and a bog walk
Recreational opportunities are mainly found at City Forest, which offers over 680 acres of preserved land with more than 9 miles of trails for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Within the forest lies the Orono Bog Walk, a 1-mile boardwalk that winds through wetland terrain and even crosses into a portion of the University of Maine. “It’s a joint venture between the university and the Bangor Land Trust,” Hatch says. “Tons of people use the City Forest and the bog walk. College kids love it; little kids love it. The bog walk is wheelchair friendly. Residents and nonresidents visiting really enjoy it.” There are several hiking areas throughout East Bangor, but Hatch says the most popular one is the East-West Loop Trail in City Forest. “It’s how you access the bog walk, and it loops around the whole thing,” Hatch says. “But there are quite a few little trails named after different animals all within that.”
Bangor Parks and Recreation plans to move their main facility from the city’s downtown waterfront area to the other side of State Route 15, closer to East Bangor. “We service everyone and the surrounding communities; both the east and west sides are integral to us,” Hatch says. “We’re in the beginning phases of getting approved to build a better facility, and we need more space for it. It’ll be our new sports complex.”
Ranch-styles and Colonial-styles define East Bangor
Residential pockets in East Bangor vary from suburban to rural. Some homes sit on neat green lawns with sidewalks and close-knit neighbors, while the outskirts feature properties spread across spacious lots or among farm fields. Buyers can find quaint, 625- to 1,500-square-foot ranch-style and raised ranch-style homes, some with attached garages and up to an acre of land, priced between $150,000 and $350,000. Larger, 1,500- to 5,500-square-foot Colonial Revival and farmhouse-style homes, some tucked into wooded lots with estate-like appearances or wide front porches, can cost between $370,000 and nearly $900,000.
Major shopping and dining surround Bangor Mall
As Interstate 95 zips along East Bangor’s east side, a bustling commercial corridor appears with big-box retailers and eateries. The Bangor Mall is a traditional shopping mall with department stores and dining spots, and just beyond the mall, there’s Walmart, Target and BJ’s Wholesale Club. The area is also dotted with chain restaurants and fast-food options, bringing city-like amenities to the otherwise pastoral community.
