Mount Hope-Stillwater Park
Athletics and education in Bangor public schools
Kindergarten through third-grade students can head to Fruit Street School, which receives an A-minus rating from Niche and is a Blue Ribbon School. They can then attend the Mary Snow School for grades four and five, which receives a B-plus rating on Niche. At the heart of the community rests the A-minus-rated William S. Cohen School, which serves sixth through eighth graders. The final stop for many students is the B-plus-rated Bangor High School. The school has a successful sports program, with over 100 state athletic championships since its founding in 1835. Students can also choose private school options, like the A-rated John Bapst Memorial High School.Stillwater Park and Cameron Stadium
Stillwater Park Playground is one of the two large parks in the neighborhood. It features an ample open green space with a half basketball court and a colorful playset with swings and rope courses. The park also has benches around the perimeter to sit and relax during an evening stroll. Garland Street Park is another park just to the south that is home to several sports fields, including Cameron Stadium, where recreational and school teams can gather for football, track meets, baseball and soccer games. “It’s the main stadium for the city, so you’ll see both Bangor High School and John Bapst sports teams and bands play there,” Ofili says.Shaded ranch and split level homes
Split-level and ranch-style homes make up the majority of the market in the neighborhood, but Ofili says many people remember the area for its Colonial Revivals. “A lot of these homes have their original trim work and high ceilings; I like to say that the homes there have its original character.” Houses sit on smaller lots under the shade of towering maple and oak trees. They have space for a garage or sizeable driveway, and many also have sidewalks out front for dog walkers and joggers. Ofili also says that homes in the neighborhood are considered reasonably affordable, with prices ranging from $200,000 to around $400,000.Chain and local Bangor shopping and dining options
When it comes to dining and shopping, the community’s proximity to the Bangor Mall is a big bonus. Residents are less than two miles from big-box stores like Walmart and Target and grocery options like Hannaford and BJ’s Wholesale Club. The shopping area is also home to several chain restaurants, like Texas Roadhouse, a personal favorite of Ofili, and one of the only two Chic Fil A locations in Maine. For more local options, residents can walk or drive to State Street and grab a slice of pizza at Papa Gambino’s Pizza and Subs or enjoy a fresh fruit pastry at Frank's Bake Shop.Trick or treating on nearby streets and downtown excitement
All around Bangor, tightly knit communities celebrate holidays together, and Mount Hope-Stillwater Park is no different. One of the more significant events is Halloween night on Maple Street just east of the neighborhood, where thousands of trick-or-treaters gather to observe the elaborate decorations awash in orange and purple lights as they stuff their bags with candy. The same thing happens around Christmas time, with string lights and inflatables filling the yards, which Ofili says creates a lighthearted competition to out-decorate the neighbors. Residents are also a short trip from downtown events, the largest of which is the Bangor State Fair. The festivities have been a tradition since 1849 and is one of the oldest fairs in the country. It occurs over two weekends in August and is jam-packed with events and activities, from carnival rides to demolition derbies and tractor pulls. Downtown is also home to the Maine Savings Amphitheater, which holds concerts throughout the summer and has had famous musical guests like Hozier and Kenny Chesney.Major highways and car-friendly residential roads
Residential streets offer plenty of space for street parking and strolls along the sidewalks. U.S. Route 2, also known as State Street, runs along the neighborhood's southern end, and Interstate 95 lies just to the north. The community is often known for being car-friendly, as “things are a little more spread out over there, so fewer people walk around,” Ofili says. “But the closer you get to the hospital, you see more nurses and doctors walking around to get to and from work.” Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is less than a mile south of the neighborhood, and Bangor International Airport Is less than 5 miles to the east.
