Quiet homes in residential pockets on Essex Street
A wide variety of housing options is available to homebuyers in Outer Essex. Many residential areas are set up in their own separate neighborhoods and residential pockets, with manufactured home communities on the neighborhood’s northern end. Many smaller homes are ranch-styles and Cape Cods, while most larger homes are Colonial Revivals and New Englanders. There is a wide range of build years, from historic early 1900s homes to some constructions from 2024. “Lots of homes in Bangor tend to be more historic or older,” Conrad says. Prices in the neighborhood commonly range from around $200,000 to $550,000.Trails in and Outer Essex
Essex Woods is home to trails, a basketball court and the Bangor Dog Park. Additional trails and picnic areas can be found at Prentiss Woods, located right behind the high school. Bangor City Forest is just 5 miles from the community, with over 680 acres of wildlife habitats, working forests and 9 miles of trails. “It’s an excellent place to go on a hike, and you can see residents walking their dogs there all the time,” Conrad says.Bangor High School athletics and Husson University
Bangor area students can start their education at Fruit Street School, which receives an A-minus rating on Niche. They can continue to the William S. Cohen School, which also scores an A-minus. The B-plus-rated Bangor High School, located in Outer Essex, has been a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence since 2002 and is the only Class A school in northern Maine. The high school is also especially proud of its athletics programs, with its girls’ soccer team winning the 2024 state championship. For those seeking higher education, the neighborhood is right next to Husson University, a private university that opened in 1898.Bangor State Fair and nearby outdoor concerts
Residents of Outer Essex are just a short drive from several downtown events, the largest of which is the Bangor State Fair. The fair has been a tradition since 1849 and is one of the oldest in the country. It occurs over two weekends in August and is packed with activities, including carnival rides, demolition derbies and a number of local performances. The downtown area is also home to the Maine Savings Amphitheater, which holds concerts throughout the summer and has hosted musical guests like Hozier and Avril Lavigne.Access to Interstate 95 and Broadway
Outer Essex has a number of transportation options. Interstate 95 is one of the busier and more important roads in Bangor. It cuts through the lower portion of the neighborhood, making trips to nearby Newport and Orono a streamlined process. The neighborhood is more car-friendly, but with Broadway right along the western end of the community, getting to downtown Bangor takes only a few minutes. Saint Joseph Hospital is less than 2 miles away, and Bangor International Airport is 4 miles to the west.Nearby and the Broadway Shopping Center
Broadway Shopping Center includes anchor stores like Hannaford and T.J. Maxx, as well as numerous local and international restaurant chains. Governor's Restaurant & Bakery is a small spot with a diner feel where patrons often need doggy bags to carry home the large portions of chowder and house-made baked goods. For a fancier dining experience, residents can head to The Tarratine. This historic three-story restaurant used to be an exclusive club originally led by former vice president Hannibal Hamlin. “The club was bought up by the Quirk family and turned into this lovely space for both events and dinners,” Conrad says. Daily specials range from locally sourced salads to cider-braised pork shoulder.
