New builds next to vintage styles in Barberton
East Barberton’s streets form a grid in the primarily residential northern area, while in the south, housing tends to fan out from commercial areas. Sidewalks are not a guarantee, so walkability is limited. Homes date back to the early to late 20th century, with styles like Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and bungalows, but there are also newer builds. “It goes from an 1800s house to a 2023 house — and you’ll find those on the same street," Halstead says. "Some developers will tear down old homes and build something new." Lot sizes vary from below a quarter of an acre up to an acre. Prices range from $120,000 to $270,000 and upward. Sales prices saw a year-over-year change of 12% between 2023 and 2024, and homes spend an average of 22 days on the market, half the national average.Wooded trails at Anna Dean Park
Parks are a highlight of East Barberton, home to two of the city's largest green spaces. Centrally located in the neighborhood, Tuscora Park is easily walkable for some residents. Spanning 19 acres, this park has walking trails that weave between a scattering of trees. The park's amenities include playgrounds, basketball court, tennis court and baseball diamond. Anna Dean Park is a go-to for a slice of nature, with a hidden entrance between the trees on Dogwood Lane. Here, wooded trails traverse this lush, 14-acre space.Newly consolidated schools in Barberton City School District
East Barberton is zoned for Barberton City School District, earning an overall B from Niche. In 2023, the district consolidated some of its schools. Now, Barberton Primary serves kindergarten through second grade and Barberton Intermediate schools third through fifth grade. Due to the recency of this change, these schools do not yet have a Niche grade. Students move on to Barberton Middle for sixth through eighth grade and Barberton High for ninth through 12th. Both earn a B-minus. Through the Four Cities Compact, the high school offers 18 career and technical programs for 11th and 12th graders.Seventeen thousand blooms at the Mum Festival
Barberton's special events are centered downtown, just 1.5 miles west. The Mum Festival, held in September, is named for the 17,000-plus chrysanthemums arranged in intricate designs. The event includes arts and crafts vendors, a canoe race, and water ski show. Chrysanthemums are also for sale there. The Barberton Farmers Market takes place from June through October on Hopocan Avenue.Emergency care is close by
Locals may walk, drive or take the bus downtown. Robinson Avenue is a westward route toward the city center. The Number 3 bus has stops along Fifth Street Northeast every 30 minutes. Within East Barberton, Summa Health has an emergency room open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Many other healthcare providers, from family practices to specialists, have offices in the neighborhood. Highway 76 is about 3 miles from the center of the neighborhood, offering easy access to the greater region. Akron is less than 10 miles away by car.Famous chicken at Belgrade Gardens
Residents can shop and dine without venturing beyond the neighborhood. Fifth Street Northeast cuts through the center of the neighborhood, and has a Giant Eagle Supermarket, Family Dollar and CVS. A mile trip across the river leads to West Tuscarawas Avenue, central Barberton's walkable, tree-lined main street. Here, M and M's Taphouse has casual bites, retro video games and live music on the weekends. A point of pride in Barberton, according to Halstead, is Barberton chicken, which is cooked with fresh meat, fried in lard and seasoned with salt. “Barberton is famous for its chicken,” she says, noting that Belgrade Gardens, which has been in the neighborhood since 1933, was the first to serve it. “It’s the best one. It’s amazing. The service is great, the people are great."
