19th- and 20th-century architecture amidst new development
“Most of our housing is older,” Hendrix says. “Much of Batesburg-Leesville was developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s leading up to the Great Depression, so we have a lot of historic residential architecture, especially surrounding our downtown business districts. We haven’t seen as much new development as some of our neighboring communities have.” Opportunity awaits, though, as many listings in Batesburg-Leesville contain land that hasn’t been built on and may or may not have plans for construction. It’s an up-and-coming area, and though development hasn’t hit hard yet, both independent single-family homes and single-family homes within planned communities are continuously being built. Most of the new builds are American traditional, some with craftsman influence, and the older historic homes are often bungalows and ranch-style. The average listing here is about $170,000. On the lower end, a two-bedroom craftsman might go for around $150,000, and on the higher end, a three-bedroom new traditional in a planned community will list for $270,000. Housing prices depend largely on the age of the home and the amenities offered by its community.Movie nights and concerts in Leesville Park and Batesburg Train Depot Park
Batesburg-Leesville has two main parks: Leesville Park, which has a playground, walking trail and stage where ongoing events like concerts are held, and Batesburg Train Depot Park, home to the historic Batesburg train depot as well as a playground and host of smaller community events like movie nights. The town also has Batesburg-Leesville Leisure Center, an active athletic facility with racquetball, basketball and volleyball, as well as karate classes for kids, line-dancing for adults and designated times for pickup pickleball and basketball. Two esteemed golf courses are in the area: Ponderosa Country Club and Indian Trail Golf Course. Since 1993, the public Indian Trail Golf Course has served the community with its commitment to fair pricing to ensure all its neighbors can golf, and the course is fully irrigated to ensure quality conditions of the green year-round. Those interested in a membership-based club can join the 1965-founded Ponderosa Country Club, which has a par 72 18-hole course on 214 acres with stunning views and golf options for all ability levels. The family-friendly facility also boasts an Olympic pool, restaurant and event spaces. For a weekend away, families travel 22 miles to nearby Lake Murray, a 50,000-acre manmade lake popular for boating, sailing and catching sunsets from the shoreline.Batesburg-Leesville High School brings the town together
“If you’re from Batesburg-Leesville, you went to Batesburg-Leesville High School, so there’s certainly a big connection between the community and the schools,” says Hendrix. “Our high school athletics are very popular, as are the arts performances like band concerts and plays.” All Batesburg-Leesville students attend schools in Lexington County School District Three, which has a state-of-the-art fine arts center and recently received a federal grant to expand its schools’ security measures. They start at Batesburg-Leesville Elementary School before continuing to Batesburg-Leesville Middle and Batesburg-Leesville High School, all of which scored B-minuses or C-pluses on the educational review site, Niche. Those interested in private, Christian, college preparatory schooling can send their children to W. Wyman King Academy, which serves students in preschool through twelfth grade and received a B-plus on Niche.Seasonal events like the South Carolina Poultry Festival
Each year in May, Batesburg-Leesville hosts the three-day South Carolina Poultry Festival, an event that draws over 100,000 people. Established as a “thank you” to the poultry industry, the largest industry in the Batesburg-Leesville area, the event has grown from humble beginnings as a small carnival with pie-eating and chicken-calling contests to a full-out fair that attracts visitors from across the state. Now complete with a parade, 5K, multiple stages of entertainment and vendors lining Main Street to showcase their work, the South Carolina Poultry Festival is the pulse of the Batesburg-Leesville community. It is an event that keeps neighbors united and the town’s culture thriving. During the holidays, everyone comes together for events like Halloween on Main, the Annual Christmas Parade, and Christmas Movie Nights in Wilson Street Park. Throughout the year, residents participate in the ongoing programming of the Batesburg-Leesville Branch Library, which has art classes, story times, game nights and social clubs. They spend their weekends at The Big Mo in nearby Monetta, a 1950s drive-in that draws families in their cars with folding chairs to catch up with friends and catch a flick on the lawn.

“We’ve grown to be a commercial hub in western Lexington County,” says Hendrix. “We pull traffic from the smaller surrounding areas.” He’s right: Batesburg-Leesville is the only of its surrounding towns to have a Walmart, alongside other food and retail chains like Starbucks, Taco Bell, Bojangles, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Dollar General and Zaxby’s. It also has two thriving business districts occupied by local bars and restaurants like Kathy’s Bar and Grill, a cozy dive with karaoke and pool, Shealy’s Bar-B-Que, which serves classic country cooking in an all-you-can-eat buffet, The Root Cellar B-L, a homestyle diner serving Southern staples, Mi Rancho and San Jose Mexican, popular spots for Mexican food, and iCrave Café, everyone’s favorite coffee shop. “We don’t have a movie theater or any of the things like that that you might find in a bigger city,” says Hendrix. “For things like that, you would have to drive about 20 minutes to Lexington,” which has additional retail chains like Target, Lowe’s, Publix and The Home Depot.
