A residential community near museums and custom homes

Bocage might not be in the heart of downtown, but it is in the center of the action. Near Tiger Stadium and all the culture of downtown, Bocage is a proximally located area close to museums, natural beauty and recreation. "Bocage is close to everything in South Baton Rouge. It's within walking distance of wonderful clubs and is very family-oriented. All the Millennials want to be here," says Realtor Vicki Spurlock with Locations Real Estate. Spurlock has sold homes across the area for just over 15 years. "There's a real beauty to the neighborhood. It's older and well-established, with amazing custom-built homes."

French Provincials and cozy cottages

Bocage features a diverse mix of contemporary and established housing. "Every home is quality," Spurlock says. Townhouses mingle with Acadian and French Provincial homes, and ranch styles and cottages line the streets. There are even a few Mediterranean homes mixed in between. Plus, Bocage features condo options in the Jefferson Condominium complex on the community's east end. Lawns are well-maintained; some take advantage of Louisiana's abundant native trees, flowers and shrubs to complete the landscape. Several residential streets have sidewalks, so locals enjoy an evening stroll with their families. "Kids often play outside and ride bikes here," Spurlock says. Housing prices range widely. Townhomes and a few single-family homes can cost as low as $300,000, while newly built homes with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms can cost well over $1 million.

Popping in the shops at Cedar Lodge

Local shoppers enjoy the convenience of having Towne Center at Cedar Lodge in the community's heart. The shopping mall features several high-end retailers, like Chico's, Loft and Merci Beaucoup, among Bocage Pharmacy Centre and Whole Foods Market for pharmaceutical and grocery needs. Corporate Boulevard features additional popular shopping centers. Market Center City Place features a Barnes and Noble and a movie theater. Bocage has several restaurants where locals enjoy dinner. Portobello's Grill opened in 1996 and is one of the area's favorite restaurants with a slightly upscale but cozy atmosphere. In addition to a daily happy hour, there are weekly specials like family night or weekend brunch. Locals enjoy the crabmeat cheesecake, Gulf Fish Pecan or a lemon blueberry tart.

A walk in the Burden gardens

Bocage might not have formal parks, but it still has its share of green spaces. Burden Museum and Gardens stretches nearly 440 acres and provides historical and educational experiences highlighting the state's rich cultural past. The land for the complex was donated to LSU in 1966, and today, it's filled with Louisiana's flora and fauna, comprising three separate sections. The first section of the Burden Museum is the botanical gardens. This section is split into 15 areas, which feature a tropical garden, three miles of walking trails, and much more. The second section is the historic Windrush Garden. Windrush is primarily a green garden with symmetrically designed beds, water features, classical sculptures and ornamentation. For a more traditional park setting, families often head 2 miles up to the road to Independence Community Park. The park features multipurpose fields, tennis courts, a playground and more botanic gardens.

Navigating Baton Rouge

Bocage is just 7 miles from Downtown Baton Rouge, and drivers often hop on Interstate 10 westbound to reach the city's heart. And while several residents drive to get around, several bus stops line Corporate Boulevard. CATS, or the Capital Area Transit System, serves the community. When locals want to catch a flight, they head to the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, 13 miles away. Bocage is home to Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center.
