Lobdell-Woodale mixes quiet living with career learning hubs
Some neighborhoods are hard to define. These enclaves are equal parts residential and, well, something else. In the case of Baton Rouge’s Lobdell-Woodale community, the primarily residential area envelops multiple junior colleges along with several career and technical institutes. But that’s not all. The century-old area has a small commercial corridor. There are also three different green spaces which are complemented by the mature trees and flowering shrubs dotting the neighborhood’s landscape. The established area has many options for commuting too, with five of the city’s largest thoroughfares running through and around it. For those seeking a residential haven with educational options to explore, the established Lobdell-Woodale community is a perfect place to call home.
Cottages, ranch homes and condos at more affordable prices
Living in the Lobdell-Woodale neighborhood offers homes for far less than the national average. For that matter, the housing prices here are lower than in many other parts of Baton Rouge. The community is a grab-bag of traditional architectural styles like cottages and ranch-style residences along with newer apartment buildings and condominiums. You’ll find split levels, Acadians and a nice-sized stock of midcentury homes as well. Prices range from $120,000 for a shotgun house needing a little love to $200,000 for a three-bedroom two-bath ranch-style dwelling.
Neighborhood schools and colleges blend academics, tech and job skills
Students in the neighborhood might attend several private or public schools such as Broadmoor Elementary, Capitol Middle Magnet or Tara High. Broadmoor Elementary strives to create a supportive environment for children to learn and become their best selves. It focuses on science, math and art during the regular school year and offers summer camps for students with special needs. Capitol Middle Magnet teaches courses in Game and Web Design as well as Robotics. Its students can also earn high school credit for classes like computer science, foreign languages and algebra. Tara High participates in dual enrollment courses with several area colleges while simultaneously operating the Cy-Tech Magnet Academy. This program allows students to graduate with a diploma and an associate degree in computer science. There are also several junior and technical colleges. Founded in 1986, Camelot College is focused on helping to educate and provide skills to the unemployed and underemployed in the business and medical fields. Licensed by the Louisiana Department of Education, the school has proven vital to East Baton Rouge and the surrounding parishes by providing quality short-term job-specific training for careers in Crisis Management, Medical Assistance and Administrative Medical Assistance.
Three neighborhood parks offer trails, fields and gardens
Lobdell-Woodale is a cozy hamlet with several dedicated green spaces. The largest is Milton J. Womack Park. Covering 22 acres, this park has plenty of room for games of catch along with a walking trail and multipurpose ball fields. Tickie Saia Memorial Park occupies four acres but is jam-packed with ball fields and courts, a playground and an open-air gym. The smallest park is less than two acres and goes by the name of Blueberry Street Park. This pocket-sized space is known for its gardens and arboretum as well as a recreation center and pavilion.
Florida Boulevard brings dining, shopping and entertainment
The neighborhood also has a small commercial corridor with everything from a dedicated meat market to jazz clubs. Florida Boulevard, one of the city’s major roadways, offers eateries, grocery stores and entertainment venues.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Great place to live, really excited about the new direction in the community especially the old Mall City being turned into the ART District. Pretty exciting to watch the transformation happen.
