In Oak Hills Place, old and new homes meet in Baton Rouge's outskirts

Less than 10 miles from Downtown Baton Rouge, the Oak Hills Place subdivision is waiting to welcome you home. Initially developed in the 1950s, the neighborhood is filled with medium and large single-family homes that, surprisingly, were mostly built between 2000 and today. That doesn’t mean there’s no older housing, however, if that’s what you prefer. The neighborhood also has its own 12-acre lake, maintained by volunteers. It's close to entertainment and shopping districts such as the Mall of Louisiana and Bluebonnet Boulevard, as well as Tiger Stadium and Louisiana State University. Oaks Hills Place is an inviting suburb on the outskirts of Baton Rouge. The neighborhood provides its residents with entertainment, recreation, dining and more just steps from home and mere miles from downtown.

French and Creole architecture define this neighborhood's streetscapes

Homes in the Oak Hills area come in a wide variety of styles and prices. In fact, a home can range from $185,000 for a house needing TLC, to several million for an estate-style dwelling with five bedrooms and six baths. Much of the housing stock is custom built, and large residences are common, especially closer to the lake. Slightly more established homes tend to be traditional designs including Acadians, French Provincial and ranch-style dwellings. Lawns are very well taken care of here, and some make use of native trees and flowers for landscaping.

Oak Hills Place's schools offer diverse extracurriculars

For educational choices, there are parochial, private and public schools close by. Wildwood Elementary is one of the 35 most diverse public elementary schools in Louisiana and focuses on helping children grow academically and socially. It has a celebrated dual language immersion program for Spanish and English, as well as a gifted and talented pathway. Wildwood is a two-time district soccer champion too, so if your children love the sport, this might be the spot for them. Westdale Middle Magnet offers courses in French, Spanish and Mandarin, as well as coding, aquaponics and advanced art. Woodlawn High School prepares students for college or careers with its dual enrollment opportunity with Southeastern Louisiana University.

The local community park includes an observatory and sports facilities

For all-day fun for every member of the family, 144-acre Highland Road Community Park is an expansive green space designed to relax and revive, no matter how you choose to do so. If you’d care to take a long stroll in the open air, the park’s walking trail will make it a comfortable and pleasant one. Should you find exercise is the secret to your Zen, there’s an outdoor fitness station and basketball courts to put you into paradise. For sports enthusiasts, multiple illuminated ball fields, tennis courts and even a rugby patch await. Don’t forget to try the spray pad when the weather turns from warm to hot.

In a different section of the recreation area, the Highland Road Park Observatory has served as a meeting place for amateur astronomers, as well as stargazing LSU Astronomy professors and graduate students, since 1981. The octagonal main building houses two reflecting telescopes of varying sizes. The larger 20-inch one has been used to discover over 50 new asteroids from its place beneath the retractable dome. It’s free to visit, and the staff is more than happy to answer questions on space sciences.

Oak Hills Place is bounded on two sides by retail corridors

Should you find yourself wanting a lovely breakfast or lunch, The Ambrosia Bakery welcomes you to its combination bakery and deli. Opened by two New Orleanians in 1991, the business has expanded from a 1,200-square-foot space to its current home of 8,200 square feet. You can try the delicious baked goods in-store, or in the outdoor seating area. In addition to pastries and rolls, there are salads, wraps, soups and sweets.
