Wildwood
Baton Rouge's best shopping, plus 'dang good' eating
Mall of Louisiana, the state’s largest, is adjacent to the neighborhood. In addition to 180 stores, it’s home to the Blue Zoo Aquarium and one of the world’s largest indoor carousels. Perkins Rowe outdoor mall is another top Baton Rouge destination, featuring two dozen stores, a dozen restaurants and a movie theater. Grocery options are also diverse – there are five grocers in the neighborhood, from The Fresh Market to the locally-owned Southside Produce Market. Dining options are truly diverse. The upscale Supper Club is one of Baton Rouge’s most exclusive eateries. The vibes are more down-home at Crawford’s, which is renowned for its fried catfish and seafood lunch combos. “It’s the best dang fried catfish you will ever eat,” says Baton Rouge resident Bill Adams. Creole, Mediterranean and Vietnamese options are among the many styles found in the neighborhood.Easy access to I-10, hospital campuses
In addition to being adjacent to I-10, four of Baton Rouge’s busiest thoroughfares are in the neighborhood, with Perkins Road joining the border streets for convenience or congestion depending on the time of day. Three CATS bus routes run through the neighborhood – the Essen Bus on Staring Lane, the Perkins Bus on Perkins Road, and the Highland bus on Bluebonnet Boulevard. Wildwood is also adjacent to Our Lady of the Lake and Oschner medical centers. “What I think draws people is the convenience off the interstate, and the easy access to shopping and the hospitals,” Adams says. “It’s also a wonderful place to live near LSU, but not in the middle of LSU.”LSU games a short drive away
From tailgates and football games at Tiger Stadium to baseball games at Alex Box Stadium, LSU’s stadium complex is about 6 miles from the neighborhood. Within the neighborhood, Baton Rouge’s Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library offers regularly scheduled weekly and monthly events running the gamut from book club meetings, craft workshops, and story times for toddlers. From pickup games to an urban swamp
Even in south Louisiana, a neighborhood swamp is not the norm. That’s not the case here, where the 103-acre Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is the largest tract of swamp in the city. With a mile of gravel pathways and boardwalks, visitors can spot hundreds of bird species as well as otters, snakes, turtles, foxes, coyotes and deer. The facility is operated by BREC, which also runs the neighborhood’s Mayfair Park and Recreation Center. Pickup basketball games are common at Mayfair’s indoor and outdoor courts, and the facility also offers tennis courts, a picnic pavilion and playground.A variety of subdivisions with different price points
The Wildwood name is a bit of a misnomer – Wildwood is one of just seven distinct and disconnected subdivisions comprising the neighborhood. Though brick is the tie that binds most houses here, the styles vary from ranches and Creole cottages to spacious two-story custom builds. Homes range in price from $140,000-$1.15 million, with the houses in the million-dollar range located in The Myrtles subdivision.A mix of public, charter and private school choices nearby
Wildwood Elementary School, the neighborhood's namesake, serves grade school students in the area and receives a B-minus rating from Niche. Middle schoolers would move on to Glasgow Middle School, which also receives a B-minus. Mayfair Lab School, a K-8 charter school with an A-minus rating, is in the neighborhood. High school students are zoned for Tara High, which has a D-plus Niche rating. The Dunham School, a nearby K-12 inter-denominational Christian school with an A-rating and a 2005 National Blue Ribbon Award, is popular choice for neighborhood parents.Bodies of water make flooding a concern
Flooding is a risk in many areas of Baton Rouge given the heavy rains and low terrain of south Louisiana. That’s especially true of Wildwood, which has three bodies of water – Bayou Fountain to the south, Dawson Creek to the north, and the Bluebonnet Swamp between the two.
