Battle Ground’s name is somewhat of a contradiction, given there was no battle on its grounds. Instead, it refers to a peaceful encounter in 1855 between Captain William Strong and the Indigenous Klickitat tribe who tried to escape their internment at Fort Vancouver. Though the confrontation was expected to turn violent, both sides remained cooperative, even after the mysterious death of the tribe's Chief Umtuch. The present-day city of approximately 34,500 people is located between the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Mountains, about 16 miles north of Vancouver. “It’s got that quaint, small-town feel, but it is growing,” says Kenneth Rosengren, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty Premier Partnership. “A lot of people know who you are in Battle Ground.” Founded on the principle of peace, the city provides its community with a quiet suburban lifestyle amidst serene Pacific Northwest nature.

Battle Ground Veterans Memorial at Kiwanis Park
Battle Ground’s largest green space occupies around 8 acres almost directly in the center of town, marrying modern community with commemoration of the past. Kiwanis Park has a splash pad, a basketball court, a climbing wall, a barbecue grill and a picnic table. The green space is also the site of the Battle Ground Veterans Memorial, dedicated to 31 local veterans who died in service on Veterans Day in 2015.
Fairgrounds Park—which refers to the green space’s original function as the site of the Clark County Fair—is now home to the Battle Ground Community Center and the Skate & Bike Park, which is widely considered one of the best skate parks in the state. The nearby Battle Ground Lake State Park surrounds a spring-fed lake. Camping, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking and occasionally, horseback riding are some of the pastimes that draw people to the picturesque evergreen forest and lake.

Statistics indicate a buyer’s market: the median home sales price has decreased by 4% yearly, and homes spend an average of 6 more days on the market than that of the national average.

Main Street eventually merges into Interstate 5
Main Street traverses the entirety of the neighborhood, and the thoroughfare becomes known as Washington state Route 502 west of the city, where it eventually merges into Interstate 5. The interstate travels south to Vancouver, about 16 miles away, and Portland, about 26 miles away. Alternatively, drivers reach Vancouver via 10th Avenue, which runs north to south through Battle Ground and eventually becomes Washington state Route 503. Clark County’s public transit system, C-TRAN, maintains two bus routes that connect the community to the Vancouver Mall Transit Center. From there, passengers can connect to more transit options.

Shopping, dining and living in Battle Ground Village
The main strip of restaurants and businesses in Battle Ground is along Main Street, which runs east-west through the center of town. Albertsons, Safeway and a collection of both national chains and local fast-casual eateries make up the commercial stretch, though residents often head south for more options. “If they’re looking for a Friday-night vibe, people are probably going to Vancouver or Portland,” Rosengren says. “But there are still some good, family-oriented restaurants and a couple of little bars and pubs people like to go to on Main Street.” The city is currently working to add more turning lanes and traffic signals to the intersection of Main Street and 15th Avenue to improve traffic flow on the busy thoroughfare.
To the southeast of the neighborhood is Battle Ground Village, a mixed-use shopping area. Local restaurants and small businesses, like salons and massage therapists, have settled in around apartments, townhouses and the community library.

Low bond rates for Battle Ground School District
The Battle Ground School District consists of 15 schools and four alternative learning centers, which teach approximately 10,000 students altogether. The district receives an overall B-minus grade from Niche.

Battle Ground enjoys fairly moderate weather; the average summer high stays below 80 and average winter lows hover just above freezing. A high amount of precipitation—around 53 inches per year—creates the mossy, verdant environment the Pacific Northwest is known for.
