Named after the Bay River
The community of Bayboro is named after the Bay River that flows through the area. The waterway is a part of the Neuse River system and is known for fishing and boating opportunities. Although Bayboro is farther inland than other Pamlico County towns, locals still enjoy ample outdoor recreation and waterfront living. Bayboro has been the seat of Pamlico County since the late 1800s. Beyond the official town limits are other communities like Bay City, Stonewall and Alliance, all of which have Bayboro mailing addresses. The community also has several farmlands and large tracts of residential properties.
Riverside recreation and local wildlife close to Bayboro
Canoe access to the Bay River is found off Griffin Road in Vandemere. Joe Himbry Waterfront Park offers a dock for fishing and a play area. The grounds include baseball diamonds and a small playground beside a wooded area. Locals may see wild turkeys grazing near the ball fields during the fall. The area has nearby game lands where hunters can find wildlife such as deer, foxes and waterfowl. Neuse River Game Land also has camping sites. Light Ground Pocosin Game Land has no public access road, so visitors must ensure they are not entering private property.
Buyers will find ranch-style houses, farmhouses and manufactured homes
Most Bayboro houses are clustered about a mile from downtown. Other homes throughout the community are found on residential streets branching off Main Street, also known as Highway 55. There are also several waterfront properties along the river, with some containing backyard docks and piers. Buyers will find houses in subdivisions, down country lanes or planting across from sprawling farmland. The area primarily includes brick ranch-style houses, colonial-inspired farmhouses and manufactured homes. Some dwellings, which sit on wooded lots, are not visible from the street. Homes typically range in price from about $190,000 to $350,000; however, some riverfront homes can list as high as $620,000.
Businesses on Highway 304 and Main Street
The majority of Bayboro businesses are down Highway 304 and Main Street. Sweet Annie's Coffee and Bakery Co. sells pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and iced lattes. Main Street has casual restaurants, such as Charlie's Restaurant and Mayo's Seafood Restaurant. To the west, near the town of Grantsboro, a Food Lion and Walmart Supercenter await.
From Fred A. Anderson Elementary to Pamlico County High
The school district offers out-of-district enrollment under specific conditions for families; However, most students attend schools near downtown. Children start at Pamlico County Primary School, which has a B-plus rating on Niche. Fred A. Anderson Elementary and Pamlico County Middle Schools have B ratings. The district is constructing a new building behind the middle school to house eighth to twelfth graders. In the meantime, older students will head to the B-minus-rated Pamlico County High.
Events in Pamlico County
As a part of Pamlico, locals are close to county-wide events, like the Ol' Front Porch Music Festival. The musical event features local artists performing a range of music genres, from folk and bluegrass to gospel and jazz; the free-to-the-public weekend event is hosted in Oriental. New Bern has popular events like the North Carolina Film Festival and the Footloose on the Neuse outdoor concert series.
Weather history in Pamlico
Bayboro and the rest of Pamlico County have a history of flooding. In 2018, Hurricane Florence caused flooding and property damage throughout the region. Western North Carolina is also at risk of wildfires.
Driving to Grantboro and New Bern
The community includes several houses of worship with small congregations, including Bayboro Missionary Baptist Church and Alliance United Methodist Church. Highway 55 leads to Grantsboro in about 5 miles and New Bern in about 20 miles. Oriental awaits about 15 miles from Bayboro. The Craven Area Rural Transit System offers limited fixed routes throughout the greater region for some residents, including seniors.
