Heron Bay
Rural Neighborhood in Bayou La Batre, Alabama
Mobile County 36523
Abundance of housing options
Single-family homes tend to hug Heron Bay’s many waterways. Prices and styles range from $165,000 for a renovated three-bedroom cottage built in 1983 to $750,000 for a three-bedroom raised cottage on the waterfront built in 2022. Some older properties offer two homes on one lot for $400,000, and buildable lots range from $20,000 to $50,000. Manufactured homes range from $68,000 to $145,000. Bay Palms RV Resort is an amenity-rich destination and a good launchpad for exploring Heron Bay. “There’s a new RV park with a pool opening up called Paradise Found, and it has 246 slips," says Deerman. “They’re already preselling at $69,000 or if you’re on the water, for around $150,000.”Nature preserves and Dauphin Island
Nearly 500 acres of marsh, forest and piney flatwoods in Portersville Bay and Heron Bay Wetlands Tracts are protected nature preserves, where birders and kayakers escape. Sitting beside the coast at Heron Bay Wetlands, Jemison’s Bait and Tackle “is the last stop to buy bait before heading to Dauphin Island,” says Deerman. “That’s where you can get your harvest inspected by the Alabama Marine Resources Division. It’s all very well regulated. There’s actually an ongoing study on Dauphin Island to promote oyster farming.” On Dauphin Island, seed produced by the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory is given to farmers with access to waters that support oysters. Sunsets and white sand beaches on Dauphin Island also draw visitors and lots of acclaim.Coastal Studies is the signature academy at Bryant High
Children from Heron Bay, which is part of the Mobile County School District, start at Booth Elementary, which earns a B grade from Niche. Students then move on to Alba Middle School and Bryant High, which both earn a Niche grade of C+. Bryant High channels students into career-focused academy programs, including their signature Coastal Studies Academy, which offers hands-on opportunities, field visits and internships.Bright lights at Bellingrath Gardens at Christmas
With 65 acres of beautiful, cultivated gardens and year-round blooms and events, Bellingrath Gardens & House is a well-known regional attraction. Sitting just across the Fowl River from Heron Bay, the gardens are especially popular during the Magic Christmas in Lights celebration. “During Christmas time, everything there is decorated,” says Jennifer Tillman, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeService and a Mobile area resident since 1982. “You can walk through the Christmas lights and see flowers and the decorated old home.” Dauphin Island draws 75,000 visitors and anglers every July for the Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. The Dauphin Island Parkway is a key regional corridor
Route 193, also known as the Dauphin Island Parkway, runs through Heron Bay along the coast of Mobile Bay between Interstate 10, Tillman and Theodore to the north and Dauphin Island to the south. Interstate 10 is 14 miles north of Mon Louis and 28 miles north of Dauphin Island. Mon Louis is 23 miles from downtown Mobile. The area is not pedestrian friendly, and most homeowners will need a car – or a boat – to travel.Seafood and international flavors in Bayou La Batre
Restaurants are rare within Heron Bay, but good options are plentiful nearby. Route 193 heads up the coast to dining and shopping just across the Fowl River north of Mon Louis. Route 188 connects with Bayou La Batre to the west. “The Lighthouse is a great restaurant in Bayou La Batre,” says Deerman. “Another great restaurant is Pelican Reef at Fowl River. My favorite, The Grand Mariner, is a bit further north at Dog River. Their seafood is excellent. Bayou La Batre is where most of our local shrimpers, many who are Vietnamese and Cambodian, do their shrimping and crabbing.” Several multicultural markets sell specialized grocery staples, and residents can buy fresh-caught seafood at processors such as H&M Seafood and Zirlotts Gulf Products. For a larger supermarket, there’s a Greer’s Market on Dolphin Island Parkway.
