What life is like in Baywood
In Baywood, established homes sit on quiet, tucked away streets that feel miles away from city life. Located near Long Island’s south shore in Suffolk County, the hamlet offers easy access to the Long Island Rail Road and Deer Park shopping while maintaining an almost-rural atmosphere. It’s around 45 miles from Manhattan and 30 miles from JFK International Airport, with waterside recreation within a short drive.
Housing styles and the local market
Most houses in Baywood were built throughout the 1950s and 1960s, from bi-levels and ranch-style homes to bungalows and Colonial Revivals. Tall oak and evergreen trees dot front yards and provide some privacy between neighbors and fenced-in back yards are common. While there are no sidewalks, a lack of through traffic makes for quiet streets where locals can ride their bikes and walk their dogs. “In Baywood, you can get more bang for your buck, plus you have a quieter atmosphere without the commercial activity found in nearby areas,” says Ed Ryan, the owner of Ed Ryan Real Estate who has decades of experience in the area. “It’s a largely residential area, but you’re close to all the villages of the South Shore.” You’ll find more affordable price points here compared to most other Long Island communities, with a median home price lower than both the Suffolk County and Nassau County medians. Homes start in the upper $300,000s and reach around $900,000, and price tags increase alongside square footage and recent updates.
Nearby public schools
The area is served by Brentwood Union Free School District including nearby schools like Southwest Elementary and West Middle. The district offers over a dozen summer enrichment programs and day camps, including a four-week music program, a golf academy and the week-long Young Inventors camp. High schoolers can earn dual credit through courses with Suffolk Community College.
Commuting to NYC and the airport
Depending on traffic, it can take over an hour and a half to reach Midtown Manhattan by car, so most regular commuters opt for the train. The Long Island Rail Road's Deer Park stop is close by and offers a direct one-hour route to Penn Station. “Depending on where you live in the community, you’re about equal distance from the Deer Park station and the Babylon station,” Ryan says. “You’re very centrally located and have easy access to the expressway and the Sunrise Highway.” You can catch the bus from Bay Shore Road, with local routes operated by Suffolk County Transit. For long-distance travel, JFK International Airport is around 30 miles, or a 40-minute drive away.
Shopping in neighboring communities
Tanger Outlets is a popular outdoor shopping mall a short drive west in Deer Park. It has luxury fashion outlets, familiar brand name stores, a movie theater and popular chain restaurants. For a meal out close to home, Bay Shore Road and Deer Park Avenue are lined with local restaurants, including:
- El Takicardio, which serves breakfast sandwiches and Mexican takeout
- Kabab Platter & Burger, offering a mix of pub fare and South Asian cuisine
- The Olympic Diner, known for its retro feel and brunch fare
For groceries and essentials, there are numerous supermarkets and big-box stores close by, including ALDI and BJ’s Wholesale Club. “Nearby, Brentwood also has an active shopping scene,” says Ryan. “Along with Babylon and Brightwaters.”
A nearby state park and outdoor recreation
Long Island is known for its sandy South Shore beaches, and the Robert Moses Causeway can take Baywood locals 10 miles south to Robert Moses State Park, home to a 5-mile stretch of oceanside shoreline. During a day at the state park, you can:
- Walk along the boardwalk to the Fire Island Lighthouse.
- Play a round of 18 at the pitch and putt golf course
- Enjoy ice cream or a cocktail from Yummier Beach Club
Closer to home, Birchwood Park has a baseball diamond and a playground, while the Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve offers over 20 miles of trails ideal for hiking and mountain biking.
