Countryside living near Amish settlements
At the edge of Ohio’s Amish country, Beach City is a small village surrounded by nature and steeped in history. Beach City, an unexpected name for landlocked Ohio, couldn’t have been named for a sparkling seaside— instead, it was named after Henry Beach, a railroad worker who made the town a depot, winning him the favor of the locals along with the dedication. Though not an Amish community itself, the culture of this neighborhood is influenced by the surrounding Amish settlements, businesses and attractions. Though Massillon is 12 miles north, there’s no mistaking that Beach City is a suburban square unto itself. “In town, you have to go out of town to pretty much do anything— unless you want to go to church or the gas station,” says Mark Maurer, internet sales representative at Grist Mill Antiques. “We’re a little bit small town, but that’s the lure of Beach City. There’s a peacefulness.” Proximity to the Beach City Wildlife Area is also a draw, and there are a few shops and restaurants known and loved by locals.
Beach City is the perfect destination for relaxation and adventure.

A walkable downtown
Laid out in a grid, the downtown itself is walkable, with narrow sidewalks and broad, tree-lined streets. Winding, rural roads on the outskirts of the community lead to larger homes on sprawling lots with a bit more seclusion. Architectural styles include Four Squares, ranch-style homes, farmhouses and New Traditional. Prices range from $100,000 to $350,000.

Amish restaurants and historic mills
Cafe 8:32 is a nonprofit brunch spot just outside the community in the neighboring village of Wilmot. This cozy café has a chic but comfortable ambiance, offering classic coffee staples along with specialty drinks, such as frappes. Amish Door Restaurant doubles as an inn. Opening its doors in 1977, this local hub serves traditional Amish and buffet-style food. At the western edge of the neighborhood, Grist Mill Antiques, housed in a historic mill, provides furniture, clothing and trinkets from a bygone era. Originally built in 1816, then rebuilt in 1860, the current owners restored the building and opened up shop in 2005. “It still has the original slate out on the front roof and the original foundations,” says Maurer. He also references an original stepping stone that lies at the entrance to the storefront. “Every person who’s ever walked into the store since 1860 has stepped on that stone.” For groceries, locals can head 4 miles north in Brewster to Belloni Foods.
