“In South 23rd Street, you’re just minutes from shopping and restaurants,” Webb says. Tokyo Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar is one popular spot, which serves hand-carved steaks and seafood prepared tableside in an energetic atmosphere. Regional chains Lupe Tortilla and Floyds Seafood are other local favorites, the former serving homemade tortillas and frozen margaritas and the latter offering Gulf Coast-style steaks and crawfish etouffee. Most get their groceries at the H-E-B in downtown Beaumont and do the rest of their shopping at Parkdale Mall, Beaumont’s premier shopping destination. Six miles north of the neighborhood, the hub houses essentially every major retailer and is surrounded by big box chains like Walmart, Best Buy and Lowe’s.City celebrations with a Southeast Texas spin
The City of Beaumont comes together to celebrate events throughout the year, often with a Southeast Texas spin. In February, the city has its own Mardi Gras, and in March, Taste of the Triangle allows residents to sample restaurants from across Southeast Texas. March is also the month of the South Texas State Fair & Rodeo, an event that draws thousands of visitors to the city ever year for the YMBL Championship Rodeo alongside carnival rides, fair food and games. In October, the city’s Oktoberfest, Dogtober Fest, Halloween celebrations and Gift of Life Color Rush 5K keep locals active and engaged in the community. Interstate 10 intersects with both U.S. Routes 90 and 96 in South 23rd Street, allowing residents convenient access in and out of Beaumont, which is 22 miles north of Port Arthur and 85 miles east of Houston. In case of emergency, residents don’t have to travel far, as the Beaumont Emergency Hospital is in the neighborhood. The Beaumont Municipal Airport is five miles west of the neighborhood; however, for most flights, residents travel 73 miles west to the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. Beaumont has a bus line that runs down College Street, providing transportation access to South 23rd Street residents.
