Parks and nature reserves 3 miles from downtown Beaverton
About 3 miles outside of Beaverton, West Beaverton is a neighborhood surrounded by nature. “I think there are a lot of people who move to West Beaverton to be near industry and businesses like Nike and Intel,” says Toby Joy Zelt, resident of two years and owner of Wild Pup Adventures. Nike and Intel are major employers in the area, with their offices about 3 miles outside the neighborhood. However, Zelt’s work let her interact with the parks surrounding her home, within West Beaverton and beyond. She started Wild Pup after her dog was diagnosed with cancer. “I decided to quit what I was doing to take her on an adventure every day for the rest of her life,” Zelt says. “Within a week or two, I realized I could take other people’s dogs with us and do amazing, fun things together.” Much of that fun comes from exploring reserves such as Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area or hiking along the Powerline Trail. Locals travel into the city to attend events or eat at one of several restaurants, including Bamboo Sushi, and students can attend Beaverton School District, which earns an A from Niche.

West Beaverton surrounded by nature
West Beaverton residents are always minutes away from a park or trail. “Right near me is the Powerline Trail,” Zelt says. “A lot of people use it for biking, running or taking their kids in strollers.” Part of the larger Powerline Trail, the Westside Regional Trail connects several parks, including Burntwood Park, which features a playground where kids can run around. The trail leads into Mount Williams Park, a forested area with mountain views. People can also walk through Lowami Hart Woods, and Zelt sometimes brings dogs to Winkelman Park, which she calls “the best dog park in the neighborhood.” There are many other opportunities to explore nature surrounding the neighborhood, with the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood about 28 miles away and the Pacific Ocean about 83 miles away.

My knowledge of the entire scope of jobs is limited. I work in high tech and my particular skills are suited to headquarter offices. The majority of jobs I see are in engineering, manufacturing, or retail. Corporate headquarters for most of the high tech companies are located elsewhere.

There isn't that much crime, but police are focusing their efforts incorrectly.

Due to the taxes and the lack of a cohesive plan, I don't think I would choose Beaverton again. We moved here from Los Gatos, CA 24 years ago and at the time I thought Beaverton was quaint and had a lot of potential. If there had been a real focus on the downtown area, it could had become a wonderful community focal point. There are charming older homes that surround the library area, but many of them are not kept up and are falling apart. These could be fixed up and the downtown area a hub of quaint eateries with outdoor seating and art galleries and people who make and sell unique items. If the homes were kept up, I believe they would attract people who would be interested in walking from their home to the these facilities, fostering an even closer community feel. Instead, there was always confusion on where the focal point should be, pushing toward the round, which is probably never going to work. The city planners should take another look at what Beaverton could be and how to make it really special.
