Glenangus is a former horse farm turned country club community
In south Bel Air, Glenangus offers a friendly atmosphere and lush setting adjacent to Maryland Golf and Country Clubs. Between the 1940s and ‘60s, the community’s rolling terrain was a prestigious thoroughbred breeding farm called Glenangus Farm. Today, horses still trot across the remaining pastures off MacPhail Road, while large homes and the club’s 18-hole golf course, racquetball complex and swimming pool take up the other part. Though locals aren’t required to join the club, it’s what brought Patty Manly, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway PenFed Realty, and her family back to the community. “We lived here for 19 years, moved away in 2005, and now we’re back two decades later,” she says. “We missed living next to everyone we played golf and tennis with. All of our best friends live in Glenangus and are club members.” Aside from the club, locals enjoy easy access to Route 24, which is lined with shopping centers and connects with other highways that lead to Baltimore and beyond.

Larges lots sometimes back up to the golf course
Homes built between the 1980s and early 2000s dot Glenangus’ winding roads, shaded by mature oak and pine trees. New Traditional houses, Colonial Revivals and contemporary styles are all common here. The median single-family home size is around 3,260 square feet, and lot sizes are typically three-quarters of an acre or larger. Some properties back up to the golf course. Homes often have four to five bedrooms and long driveways leading to garages. A few townhouses with two to three bedrooms are on the community’s east side. The median townhouse price is around $792,000, while the median single-family house price is about $1.3 million. Both figures are significantly higher than the national median. Every homeowner pays a yearly $585 HOA fee, which covers snow removal, trash pick-up and neighborhood landscaping.

Maryland Golf Course and Country Clubs and Glenangus intertwine
On the north end of Glenangus sits Maryland Golf Course and Country Clubs, which Manly says most locals join. “The neighborhood and the club are basically intertwined. I don’t think I know anyone who didn’t move here to join the club.” The 18-hole golf course weaves around streams and pockets of oak and poplar trees. Members can play on the Har-Tru tennis courts, and tournaments happen regularly on the pickleball courts. The Frogs, the club-sponsored swim team, practices regularly in the pool, which has lap lanes, a twisty slide and a mushroom-shaped waterfall. The two-story clubhouse includes multiple restaurants, including The Founders Room, a steakhouse and wine cellar, and the Cabana Club, a poolside bar. Fireworks burst over the pool during the Fourth of July celebration, and kids can take pictures with Santa at the Christmas Brunch. Depending on the plan, monthly membership dues range from $245 to $664; one-time initiation fees range from $3,375 to $12,500.

Drivers look out for golf carts and commute to Baltimore
Residents often have their own golf carts, and several golf cart crossing signs dot MacPhail Road. “Golfers have to cross that street to get to a few holes, so that’s something we always have to look out for while driving,” Manly says. State Route 24, about 3 miles west, eventually connects with Interstate 95, making Baltimore a 26-mile drive south. Depending on traffic, the drive can take between 45 minutes and an hour and a half. There aren’t any bus stops here. The Aberdeen train station, 12 miles east, is a stop along the Maryland Area Rail Commuter Penn Line and Amtrak’s Northeast Regional route, both reaching Baltimore in under 45 minutes. Manly says locals also hop on the train to reach Washington, D.C., 66 miles south. “It takes over 2 hours to get there by train, but Glenangus actually has quite a few D.C. commuters who go to the Aberdeen station every weekday.” The University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Bel Air is about 5 miles west, and the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is less than 40 miles south.
