Entirely residential neighborhood built on a small hill next to Lake Whatcom
Built on its namesake hill about 3 miles from downtown Bellingham, Alabama Hill reaches its highest elevation on the east side, with views of Lake Whatcom to the east and the rest of the city to the west. The neighborhood is entirely residential, mainly consisting of late 20th-century homes and greenspaces like St. Clair Park. Locals are also within walking or biking distance to Lake Whatcom, a popular boating and kayaking spot, and Whatcom Falls Park, home to scenic waterfalls and natural landscapes. These landmarks and others, like Whatcom Middle School, are named after one of the first permanent settlements in the Bellingham Bay area. Residents travel outside the neighborhood for most daily necessities, though there are plenty of nearby breweries, food trucks and casual eateries to the west in the Roosevelt neighborhood.

Mostly single-family homes from the ‘60s and ‘70s
Alabama Hill mainly comprises ranch-style and bi-level homes built between 1950 and 1980 along winding suburban streets. Hipped shingle-tile roofs and vinyl siding are commonly paired with flat grass lawns with native shrubbery, and quarter-acre lots are more common here than in most other Bellingham neighborhoods. Midcentury homes with three or four bedrooms tend to sell for $500,000 and $800,000. “Alabama Hill has a higher concentration of fun midcentury and 70s-style construction,” says Julian Friedman, owner and real estate agent with Julian & Company, of the Muljat Group. “Many people have updated their properties, and a lot are total time capsules. If you love homes of that time period, it’s a great place to buy and renovate.” New Traditional properties from the '90s with partial stone facades and steep roof gables can go for between $800,000 and $1.2 million. The Sunrise Village condo complex on the neighborhood’s east side offers two- to three-bedroom units for between $450,000 and $750,000. Homes farther out are at higher elevations, some offering distant views of Bellingham Bay. Cedar and pine trees line flat streets and sidewalks, along with other diverse foliage.
