Alabama Hill
Neighborhood in Bellingham, Washington
Whatcom County 98226, 98229
Mostly single-family homes from the ‘60s and ‘70s
Alabama Hill mainly comprises ranch-style and bi-level homes built between 1950 and 1980 along winding suburban streets. Hipped shingle-tile roofs and vinyl siding are commonly paired with flat grass lawns with native shrubbery, and quarter-acre lots are more common here than in most other Bellingham neighborhoods. Midcentury homes with three or four bedrooms tend to sell for $500,000 and $800,000. “Alabama Hill has a higher concentration of fun midcentury and 70s-style construction,” says Julian Friedman, owner and real estate agent with Julian & Company, of the Muljat Group. “Many people have updated their properties, and a lot are total time capsules. If you love homes of that time period, it’s a great place to buy and renovate.” New Traditional properties from the '90s with partial stone facades and steep roof gables can go for between $800,000 and $1.2 million. The Sunrise Village condo complex on the neighborhood’s east side offers two- to three-bedroom units for between $450,000 and $750,000. Homes farther out are at higher elevations, some offering distant views of Bellingham Bay. Cedar and pine trees line flat streets and sidewalks, along with other diverse foliage.Taking the Railroad Trail to Lake Whatcom
The Railroad Trail passes through Alabama Hill, curving around the base of the hill along what used to be the Burlington Northern Railroad line. The wide, tree-lined gravel hiking path extends more than 3 miles from Memorial Park on the west to Bloedel Donovan Park on the east. St. Clair Park features a large playground set on the banks of Whatcom Creek, on the neighborhood’s south side. “If you want a place to throw around a football, St. Clair is great,” Friedman says. “Whatcom Falls Park is more of a robust, epic nature preserve.” Whatcom Falls Park is on the other side of the creek, home to one of four fish hatcheries in Whatcom County and scenic waterfalls over moss-covered boulders. The creek is fed by Lake Whatcom, just east of the neighborhood and within walking distance for locals interested in swimming, fishing and kayaking.Athletic programs at local Bellingham schools
Local kids may attend Roosevelt Elementary, which receives a B-minus rating from Niche. The school’s PTA organizes volunteer and social events, including weekly playdates in the summer at the school playground and an annual parade for graduating fifth graders. The A-minus-rated Kulshan Middle has after-school activities like debate and percussion clubs. Students at the A-rated Bellingham High can join seasonal sports teams, including cheer, cross country and football. Those interested can also enroll in sports medicine and medical terminology courses.Sporting events on Lake Whatcom
About a mile east, Lake Whatcom hosts many athletic events throughout the year, including the Lake Whatcom Triathlon in July. Held in May, the Lake Whatcom Classic is an annual regatta with long and short-course races. Spectators are welcome to cheer on their friends and families from the sidelines.Exploring the rest of Bellingham by bus

Seattle is 91 miles south on I-5, while the Canadian border is about 25 miles north.
