Lettered Streets
Craftsman homes from the early 20th century
The neighborhood's narrow, sidewalk-lined streets are shaded by mature elm and maple trees, and homes are more densely packed than in nearby areas like Columbia. Craftsman and Prairie homes built between 1900 and 1925 are common here, often featuring colorful trim, and wide, covered front porches held up by pillars; two-bedroom Craftsman cottages sell for between $500,000 and $650,000, while three- to four-bedroom Craftsman and Prairie homes sell for $600,000 to $900,000. Garages aren't a given here, but neighbors can park their cars on both sides of the streets. Historically designated districts include the Cissna Cottages Historic District (found on G and H Streets), where Queen Anne homes can sell for $800,000 to $1 million.Ecological education at Maritime Heritage Park
Maritime Heritage Park is the area's largest greenspace, with walking trails along Whatcom Creek, as well as informational plaques and a fish hatchery. The park’s Native Plant Trail preserves Washington’s natural landscape before European contact, featuring plants like the bald hip rose, red elderberry and sword ferns. Throughout the neighborhood, there are a few pocket parks like Fouts Park, where kids can enjoy playgrounds with swing sets.Neighborhood coffee shops and takeaway restaurants
Coffee shops and taprooms are the main gathering spaces for locals. Lettered Streets Coffeehouse is a cozy spot housed in one of the area's oldest buildings, with plenty of seating where guests can linger over their drinks. “People are looking for the old-school feeling here,” Dean says. “I’ve noticed over the years that some might move out of the neighborhood, but they’ll come back at some point down the road because they missed it here and wanted to visit.” In the southwest corner of the neighborhood, Elizabeth Station offers a wide selection of craft beers from breweries set all around the county. While most full-service restaurants are found further south in the downtown core, locals can walk to takeaway eateries like Wanida Thai Cuisine, or visit the nearby Hana Teriyaki for Japanese cuisine. For groceries, Haggen is a little over a mile away.Meeting other residents at Lettered Streets Neighborhood Association socials.
The Lettered Streets Neighborhood Association hosts periodic meetings where residents can discuss relevant issues like planning and rezoning. In the summer, the association puts together member events like picnics, ice cream socials and potlucks.After-school clubs at Bellingham County schools
Local kids may attend Parkview Elementary School, rated B-minus by Niche, then continue to the B-plus-rated Whatcom Middle. The A-rated Bellingham High offers programs for video production, web design and robotics, as well as over 30 after-school activities, including clubs for birding and filmmaking.Walking downtown and taking Interstate 5
Lettered Streets is located just north of downtown; residents can walk to the city's core within 10 minutes. Interstate 5 is found less than 2 miles east, and travels 90 miles south to Seattle or 40 miles north to the Canadian border. A few Whatcom Transportation Authority bus routes pass through the neighborhood. The Peace Health Saint Joseph Medical Center is about 2 miles north, and Bellingham International Airport is less than 5 miles northwest.
