Late 20th-century homes on the neighborhood’s west side
Most single-family homes in Puget are set close together along narrow streets on the neighborhood’s east side. “Some places close to Interstate 5 will have a little bit of freeway noise,” Friedman says. “Further from the freeway there are some gorgeous views looking northwest and north. It’s a cool perspective; you can see the backside of Sehome Hill.” Primarily built in the second half of the 20th century, styles range from minimalist ranch-style homes and bungalows to ‘90s New Traditional-style properties with prominent two-car garages and arch windows. Three-bedroom properties tend to sell for between $500,000 and $750,000, while homes with four or more bedrooms on slightly larger lots go for $700,000 to $900,000. Since larger lots are somewhat rare in Bellingham, homes on quarter- or third-acre lots can sometimes sell for $1 million to $1.5 million. The Lakeway Mobile Estates Park is a 55+ manufactured home community on Puget’s east side. Two-bedroom manufactured homes sell for $30,000 to $130,000. Some homeowners opt for gardens or diverse native foliage over grass lawns; Redleaf Japanese Maple trees are peppered throughout the neighborhood, adding a brilliant burgundy color to the streetscapes.Local sports leagues and open play sessions at the Civic Athletic Complex
The Civic Athletic Complex, located on Puget’s north side, encompasses baseball fields, a football stadium, and an indoor ice rink. Home to the Bellingham Blazers junior hockey team and Bellingham United semi-pro soccer club, locals can watch league games or join drop-in tournaments during Friday night open play. The sportsplex also hosts public ice skate sessions, cornhole tournaments, themed skate nights and community gear swaps. The Bellingham Skate Park, BMX Dirt Jump Park and Arne Hanna Aquatic Center are all adjacent to the sportsplex. Samish Crest Trail begins on Puget’s south border before extending further south toward Galbraith Mountain. The narrow gravel hiking trail winds through dense cedar, fir and maple forests. Scenic walking trails along Whatcom Creek can be found just east of Puget at Whatcom Falls Park.Recent renovations at Bellingham public schools
Carl Cozier Elementary School, rated B-minus by Niche, sits on Puget’s west side. The Carl Cozier PTA organizes family events for the community, including book fairs, movie nights and bingo nights. The B-rated Kulshan Middle has a recently refurbished STEM lab outfitted with 3-D design engineering software, which is used for Career and Technical Education classes like woodworking. The A-rated Sehome High has new facilities renovated in 2019 for the football, tennis and baseball teams.Easy access to Interstate 5
Less than 2 miles east of downtown Bellingham, Puget locals can easily bike around town. “The city is building more bike lanes every year,” says Kirk Ghio, real estate broker with the Muljat Group. Interstate 5 borders Puget on the west, running 40 miles north to the Canadian border and 88 miles south to Seattle. Residents can also get around using Whatcom Transportation Authority buses, which have many routes stopping in Puget. PeaceHealth Saint Joseph Medical Center is less than 4 miles away, and Bellingham International Airport is about 7 miles away.Nearby Whole Foods and takeout restaurants
Shopping and dining options are concentrated on Puget's west side, near the intersection of Lakeway Drive and Interstate 5. Fred Meyer and Whole Foods grocery stores are within walking distance for some Puget residents. Fast-casual and takeaway restaurants surround the two grocery stores, including Lakeway Teriyaki, which serves sushi and other Japanese cuisine. B-Town Kitchen and Raw Bar is housed in the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, next to the highway. Serving standard American fare and fresh-caught oysters, B-Town is a popular spot for happy hour or a nice dinner on the weekend.
