Bikeable neighborhood bordered by Interstate 5
Set less than 2 miles from downtown Bellingham, bordered by Interstate 5, Puget is a centrally located mixed-use community close to everyday necessities and recreation. The neighborhood’s west side features a combination of hotels, apartments, and fast-casual restaurants anchored by Whole Foods and Fred Meyer grocery stores. While some single-family homes are located on the west side, the majority of homes in Puget are organized along truncated winding streets on the neighborhood's east side, a half-mile removed from busy commercial areas and the—at times—noisy highway. Many locals, especially those living close to Lakeway Drive, walk to nearby grocery stores or bike downtown, making this a desirable location for those who want to get around without a car. “The proximity to downtown is great,” says Julian Friedman, owner and real estate agent with Julian & Company, of the Muljat Group. “A lot of people move to Bellingham to be close to the city center. Puget is close enough to tap into that if you can handle going uphill with a bike.” On the neighborhood’s north side, athletics can use the facilities at Bellingham Sportsplex and the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center. The Congregation Beth Israel is located just south of the main residential area. Established in 1908, it's one of the oldest synagogues in western Washington.
Late 20th-century homes on the neighborhood’s west side
Most single-family homes in Puget are set close together along narrow streets on the neighborhood’s east side. “Some places close to Interstate 5 will have a little bit of freeway noise,” Friedman says. “Further from the freeway there are some gorgeous views looking northwest and north. It’s a cool perspective; you can see the backside of Sehome Hill.” Primarily built in the second half of the 20th century, styles range from minimalist ranch-style homes and bungalows to ‘90s New Traditional-style properties with prominent two-car garages and arch windows. Three-bedroom properties tend to sell for between $500,000 and $750,000, while homes with four or more bedrooms on slightly larger lots go for $700,000 to $900,000. Since larger lots are somewhat rare in Bellingham, homes on quarter- or third-acre lots can sometimes sell for $1 million to $1.5 million. The Lakeway Mobile Estates Park is a 55+ manufactured home community on Puget’s east side. Two-bedroom manufactured homes sell for $30,000 to $130,000. Some homeowners opt for gardens or diverse native foliage over grass lawns; Redleaf Japanese Maple trees are peppered throughout the neighborhood, adding a brilliant burgundy color to the streetscapes.
