Roosevelt
Apartments, duplexes and single-family homes in a range of styles
Roosevelt’s northern half is mainly residential, with a mix of single-family homes, duplexes, apartments and condos. “It’s pretty flat, so most of the lots get great sun, similar to the Sunnyland neighborhood,” Friedman says. Alabama Street bisects the neighborhood east-west, with 1920s Craftsman bungalows found closest to this main roadway and more midcentury ranch-style homes mixed in farther north. 2000s New Traditional-style homes around the neighborhood’s edges feature prominent two-car garages, small shaded front porches and either vinyl or stucco exteriors. Bungalows with two or three bedrooms needing repairs and renovations often sell for between $250,000 and $450,000, while well-maintained homes can go for $500,000 and $850,000. Minimal Traditional-style duplexes with attached garages built between 1990 and 2020 sell for between $600,000 and $800,000, while two-bedroom condos and townhouses built around the same time go for $300,000 to $500,000. According to locals, Alabama and Texas Streets have a reputation for having more crime reports and 911 calls than many other parts of the city, though it varies widely from block to block. In some places, wide, grid-planed streets can be a little uneven due to cracked and repaired asphalt, with narrow sidewalks barely separating from the road or no sidewalk at all. Most homeowners opt for flat grass front lawns with pine and maple trees.Lined by Interstate 5 on the west
Interstate 5 forms Roosevelt’s west border, running 23 miles north to the Canadian border and 89 miles south to Seattle. While not as walkable as other Bellingham neighborhoods on the west side of the freeway, walking trails and sidewalks make it easy for locals to walk to nearby breweries. Whatcom Transportation Authority bus routes connect passengers with downtown Bellingham, about 2 miles away. The PeaceHealth Saint Joseph Medical Center is about 2 miles away, while Bellingham International Airport is about 6 miles away.School gardens and college readiness programs at Bellingham schools
Roosevelt Elementary, rated B-minus by Niche, is on the neighborhood’s north end and features a community garden that's used to teach students about the natural world. The school’s PTA organizes volunteer initiatives, including weekly work parties to maintain the school’s garden in the summer. The B-rated Kulshan Middle offers after-school athletics, including cross country and basketball teams. The A-rated Bellingham High offers the Advancement Via Individual Determination program, also known as AVID, a college and career readiness elective. Career-oriented courses at Bellingham High include Engineering Technology, Technical Writing and Business & Retail Management.Local breweries with on-site food trucks
Roosevelt’s south side is home to light industrial spaces, including small manufacturers and car dealerships, many of which have been converted into breweries and gyms. The family-run Stemma Brewing Company serves craft selections like the Dill with It Dill Pickle Seltzer; like many Bellingham breweries, Stemma has three onsite food trucks: Tepozteco Taco Truck, Big Stick BBQ and Burnt Side Down, which specializes in grilled cheese. A cluster of fast-casual eateries can be found on the neighborhood’s north side, including Hawaii BBQ & Noodle House, which serves Asian fusion cuisine. The nearest Haggen grocery store is less than a mile away.Centered on Railroad Trail, Roosevelt Park and nearby community centers
The Railroad Trail, which replaced the Burlington Northern Railroad line, winds through the neighborhood along a flat, wide gravel walkway extending more than 3 miles east to Lake Whatcom. Roosevelt’s namesake park is set at the center of the neighborhood with a basketball court, swing set and climbing structure play area, all set next to a wide open field surrounded by fir and pine trees. Next to the park, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County has a range of kids' programming, including hands-on STEM activities and youth athletic leagues like flag football. St. Clair Park, set just east of Roosevelt on the north banks of Whatcom Creek, offers walking trails through coastal pine trees dripping with moss and vines.Local events during Bellingham Beer Week
Kulsan Brewing Company, one of the most popular Bellingham Breweries, has a secondary taproom in Roosevelt that hosts events like the annual Kulsan Beer Olympic Games. The games take place during Bellingham Beer Week in April, which celebrates the city’s vibrant craft beer scene with special releases and events. Teams can compete for bronze, silver or gold medals in eight different events like beer can stacking and playful heckling is encouraged.
