Sehome
Neighborhood in Bellingham, Washington
Whatcom County 98225
A mix of Single-family homes and apartment buildings
Most of the homes in Sehome were built between 1890 and 1950, featuring a mix of Craftsmen bungalows and Victorian properties that are spread across the neighborhood, peppered with the occasional American Foursquare or Cape Cod. On the neighborhood’s east side, homes are set amongst small businesses, institutions like the First Presbyterian Church (established in 1884) and apartment buildings. This part of the neighborhood also offers mid-rise condo complexes built between 1950 and 1990. On the east side, just north of the Sehome Hill Arboretum, the Sehome Hill National Historic District comprises exclusively single-family homes, often with uniform square front yards. Home prices mainly depend on how recently the home has been updated and whether it has potential as a rental property for college students. Generally, two- or three-bedroom homes in need of repairs sell for between $400,000 and $600,000, while homes with four bedrooms located along the south edge, close to Western Washington University, sell for $600,000 to $900,000. Two- to three-bedroom condos sell for $300,000 to $700,000, depending on square footage and shared amenities.Hiking through the forest at the Sehome Hill Arboretum
The Sehome Hill Arboretum, just south of the Sehome neighborhood, encompasses 175 acres of native redwood and maple forests with 6 miles of winding dirt trails. “It’s a pretty unique feature, having that much green space within walking distance,” Friedman says. Locals can explore the natural landscape, spot deer and other wildlife or head to the top of the Arboretum’s watchtower to enjoy sweeping views of the whole city. On Sehome’s west side, Forest & Cedar Park features a basketball court, swings and a playground.Newly renovated facilities at nearby Bellingham schools
Local kids start at one of two elementary schools: Lowell or Happy Valley, which each score a B-plus and a B from Niche. Afterwards, they move to the B-plus-rated Fairhaven Middle and graduate from the A-rated Sehome High. As part of Sehome High’s newly constructed campus, which opened in 2019, the school’s large drama program now operates out of a state-of-the-art 400-seat auditorium with a fly system, orchestra pit and catwalk.Small community gatherings organized by the Sehome Neighborhood Association
The Sehome Neighborhood Association serves as the touchpoint for community gatherings. The association organizes dozens of events throughout the year, including neighborhood-wide yard sales, easter egg hunts, and a pumpkin carving contest with free doughnuts and hot cider.Walking or taking the bus around Bellingham
Bordered by Interstate 5 on the east side, Sehome is connected to Seattle, 97 miles south, and the Canadian border, 45 miles to the north. In addition to being within walking distance of downtown Bellingham, several Whatcom Transportation Authority bus routes pass through Sehome, taking passengers all over the city. Peace Health Saint Joseph Medical Center is 3 miles away, while the Bellingham International Airport is 6 miles away.Nearby eateries and the Bellingham Farmer’s Market
Locally owned shops and restaurants line the Sehome’s east and west borders, including Mexican eateries like El Agave, a local Bellingham chain. Pho 99 is a local staple for Vietnamese noodle soup, vermicelli bowls and rice plates. In addition to restaurants within the neighborhood, locals can walk downtown to visit bars and breweries like Boundary Bay, which serves a range of craft beers like the Cedar Dust IPA, inspired by Galbraith Mountian trails. Every Saturday Morning from April to December, residents can stock up on produce at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market. Nearby grocery stores include the Community Food Co-op, which specializes in locally sourced produce, and a nearby Haggen supermarket just south of the neighborhood.
