Quiet and country lake life near Concord
Just south of the popular lake and hiking destination city of Laconia, the small town of Belmont is a landing place of its own. “It’s rural, country living,” says Brenda Rowan, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who used to live in Belmont. “You feel like you’re secluded, but you’re really not because everything is only 15 minutes away." Belmont has its own sandy beach on the shore of Lake Winnisquam, and the larger Weirs Beach is a 10-mile drive north. The capital city, Concord, is about 20 miles south of town, offering residents a change of pace from the nature-filled lifestyle in Belmont. “I truly think it’s the best of both worlds,” Rowan says. “You can have your horse stables and chicken coops. You’re surrounded by lakes, but you can easily commute to the city.” The community is car-dependent with a walk score of 2 out of 100; U.S. Route 3, which runs along the western edge, connects motorists to Interstate 93.
Belmont sits close to both Lake Winnipesaukee and Lake Winnisquam.

Access to Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee
As part of the Lakes Region, Belmont sees plenty of seasonal visitors. More locally, there are resort and camping areas along Lake Winnisquam where out-of-town travelers rent cottages or park their RVs. The town’s northern neighbor, Laconia, hosts even more outdoor enthusiasts during the summer and fall. The city rests on Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state. Weirs Beach, about 10 miles north of Belmont, is a popular lakeside attraction with sandy shores, a pier and a boardwalk. Another Lake Region staple, Laconia Motorcycle Week brings about 300,000 bikers to the area each year. Despite the revving of engines once a year, the Belmont community maintains an extremely quiet atmosphere, with a calm score of 99 out of 100.

Homes with acreage and lakefront properties
Branching off Laconia Road and Province Road – the main two-lane thoroughfares through Belmont – are a variety of housing stock. It's common to see 1,500- to 2,000-square-foot Cape Cods and homes with ranch styles, cabin inspirations and colonial influences. Some might sit on a couple of acres, while others provide direct access to Winnisquam Lake, and price tags typically range from $350,000 to $650,000. “Some properties have chicken coops or horse stables, but they don’t last very long on the market,” Rowan says. "The acreage is great for people who want to get back to nature with their gardens and their animals.” In the Windsor Woods subdivision, there are larger 2,000- to 3,500-square-foot New Traditional constructions that were recently built and cost between $740,000 and $1.2 million. Lakefront properties with private docks can reach up to $2 million. Winnisquam Beach Resort, a seasonal gated community on the lake, has quaint 350- to 800-square-foot cottages for sale for around $140,000 to $250,000. “People set up their campers and RVs around the little cabins,” Rowan says. “The community closes for the winter and opens up again in April.” Near the center of town, Great Brook Village is a 55+ community with 1,000-square-foot manufactured homes that cost between $120,000 and $150,000.

Local eats on Laconia Road
While the majority of Belmont is full of winding backroads and green pastures, Laconia Road turns into a small Main Street area where a few local eateries, shops and the town's public schools are located. J&J’s Yolk & Co. is a neighborhood favorite for breakfast. Residents gather at The Tap Public House Inc. for burgers, brews and the occasional live music. For a post-dinner treat, Jordan’s Ice Creamery serves homemade cones, sundaes and shakes from the window. This town center area is also where residents go for worship, with options including Belmont Baptist Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. On the north side of Belmont, Belknap Marketplace is a shopping plaza with clinics, salons and department stores like Shaw’s grocery and Big Lots. Less than a mile from there, the city of Laconia has more options for dining out and running errands. “New Hampshire has tax-free shopping,” Rowan says. “So, people come from all over to shop for big things like school clothes.”

There is one Concord Area Transit bus stop at the Belknap Marketplace, which is part of the route from Concord to Laconia. “A lot of people commute from Belmont to Concord and work at the hospital,” Rowan says, referring to Concord Hospital. The nearest airports are Manchester-Boston Regional, about 40 miles south, and Portsmouth International, about 50 miles east.
