Revitalized downtown Beloit
Like other cities with an industrial past, Beloit, Wisconsin, has faced challenges moving on from that history. For much of the 1900s, Beloit was home to various industries along the Rock River. When those jobs went away, the downtown suffered. Within the past ten years, that area has significantly transformed by repurposing old buildings. The force behind much of the change is Diane Hendricks, a billionaire businesswoman who grew up in a small town near Beloit and has invested her money into the city. “People here either love or hate her,” says Heidi Rose Anderson, a real estate agent with Century 21 Affiliated. “I think she’s done wonderful things for the city. It gave us a lot more options.” Hendricks made her fortune co-founded the ABC Supply Company, a roof and building materials distributor that's based in Beloit and one of the largest employers in town.
Much of development and growth has proliferated along the Rock River. Projects include a baseball stadium that's home to the Beloit Sky Carp, a minor league affiliate of the Miami Marlins. The other significant development by the river is a factory that's been readapted for modern uses. Over 1,000 employees work at the Ironworks Campus, a tech-job office complex and entertainment hub with a golf simulator and a duckpin bowling alley. North of downtown is what used to be the Beloit Mall. It’s now the Eclipse Center, which has a convention center, a public library and Rock County government offices.

Cross-country skiing at Turtle Creek
Over 40 parks in the city cover about 1,000 acres. Some include trails that can be used at any time of the year. The Turtle Creek Greenway Nature and Ski Trails follow Turtle Creek and can be used by snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Riverside Park is a 28-acre site on the river and is home to Turtle Island Playground, which is going through a renovation that will be ready by the spring of 2025. In addition to the park being on the river, there is a small lake in the middle, which can be navigated by paddleboats available for rent.
Take the grandkids to Turtle Island Park to release energy at the end of the day.

Second largest farmers market in Wisconsin
The Beloit Farmers Market is the second largest in the state. Thousands flock to State Street and Grand Avenue from May through October on Saturday mornings. An indoor farmers’ market takes place a few blocks away during the cold weather months. Riverside Park is where the weekly Friday evening summer concert series happens from June through August. “Sometimes they’ll show family-friendly movies,” Rose Anderson says. In early 2026, the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin will open a casino on the east side of town near Interstates 90 and 39. It’s planned to be the second-largest casino in the state.

Shopping and dining in downtown Beloit
With locally owned shops and restaurants in old buildings that have been repurposed, Downtown Beloit has become a primary retail destination. “I grew up in Beloit, moved away for 15 years, and returned. I’ve seen the transformation,” Rose Anderson says. “People will come from Illinois to come downtown. My teenage daughter will go hit the shops with her friends.” Aside from the downtown area, retail and restaurants can be found on major roads like Milwaukee or Madison Roads.

Beloit is close to the Illinois border
Beloit's median single-family home price is $210,000, compared to nearly $280,000 in Janesville, just to the north. “If you go south of the border, into Illinois, the houses tend to be cheaper, but the taxes are much higher,” Rose Anderson says. “We tend to get many transplants from Illinois, and the number one complaint is that taxes are too high there.”
