Salem is a small community in an emerging county

Salem is a rural area near growing cities like Benton and Bryant in Saline County. The residential community has a mix of older and newer homes that can go for slightly less than in those cities. Students are zoned for highly rated schools, and shopping centers are only about 10 minutes away. Little Rock is 25 miles away. close enough for an easy day trip.

What homes cost in Salem

The area has many older ranch-style and traditional houses that go from the lower $100,000s to the mid-$400,000s. More modern New Traditional homes built after 2010 often range from the lower $300,000s to the upper $700,000s. The area’s home prices can be slightly below those in Benton and Bryant. About 80% of residents are homeowners.

What living in the area is like

Salem is a rural community with plenty of trees and open space. Many streets in the car-dependent area are narrow and unmarked, and few have sidewalks. Most of the area’s businesses line Salem Road, though several churches are scattered throughout. Cason Barnhill, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty-Little Rock, says people consider Saline County’s communities to be part of one big group, paying little attention to Salem, Benton and Bryant borders. “I moved here [to Saline County] in 2018, and it has been open arms since I got here,” Barnhill says. The area’s median age is just over 40, and its populations under 18 and over 65 are roughly in line with national averages. Residents can commute to a nearby town or work from home with the area's adequate internet coverage. AT&T offers fiber internet, while T-Mobile has a 5G option.

Students attend two highly rated districts

Many Salem students attend Bryant Public Schools, a highly rated district. Salem Elementary School is in the community, and other schools are within a few miles. A few students in the southwest corner of the area may attend the Benton School District, which also gets high marks. Arkansas Christian Academy, less than 10 minutes away, is a private option. The Arkansas Children’s Educational Freedom Account Program provides families money to spend on private school tuition and other education-related expenses. All students are eligible, and the program provides an average of more than $6,500 per student.

Places to eat in and around town

Salem is small, but there are a few popular dining spots to check out. Those options include:

  • Salem Dairy Bar, an old-fashioned food stand with American classics
  • Larry’s Pizza, a regional chain with fresh pies, subs and salads
  • Lulu Belle’s Savory Eats & Sweets, a food truck with street-style Mexican food
For an upscale experience, Barnhill says people should head to Benton and check out Rober, where reservations are strongly recommended. “It’s one of the best steakhouses in central Arkansas,” Barnhill says. Residents can pick up groceries in town at Value Foods and The Front Porch Market, and there are big-box stores like Target, Kohl’s and Hobby Lobby in Benton. “Some of the things you would see in bigger cities, we’re starting to see that,” Barnhill says.

Getting to Benton, Bryant and Little Rock

Residents can easily commute to nearby cities. Benton, about 5 miles away, has a historic downtown and large employers like Saline Memorial Hospital, and is about a 10-minute drive. Bryant is also around a 10-minute drive. Little Rock, the state capital, is less than a 30-minute trip. Visitors can check out the Little Rock Zoo or the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, and travelers can catch a plane at Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport.

Things to do within a few miles

The area is mostly residential, but there are baseball and softball diamonds at Wess Grant Community Park, also called Salem Ballpark. A few miles away in Benton, people can kayak or fish for bass and panfish on the Saline River, which has several public access points. Benton is also home to Longhills Golf Course, which offers public tee times, and Tyndall Park, which has a splash pad, a skate area and several sports courts. In Bryant, Mills Park has a swimming pool and walking and biking trails among its amenities.
