Lake Michigan Beach
From modest houses off the water to multi-million-dollar lakefront estates
Lake Michigan Beach is a heavily wooded community, bringing privacy to subdivisions, small lakes and the Lake Michigan beachfront. “It’s an area where people aren’t on top of each other,” says Green. “It’s spread out and has a more natural feel with lots of trees.” Houses in front of Lake Michigan sit atop a bluff above the sand. They come in all sorts of architectural styles and sizes, ranging from 2,500 to 7,000 square feet, selling between $675,000 to $3.75 million. The few houses surrounding the smaller Hibbard and Harris lakes were built in the early 2000s. They sit on 1-to-2-acre lots and sell for around $600,000 to $700,000. Wooded and hilly subdivisions feature 800-to-3,500-square-foot houses ranging anywhere from $150,000 to $450,000.On average, homes in the neighborhood sell after 35 days on the market, which is faster than the national average. The neighborhood also receives a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score.Beaches accessible from steep staircases
Locals have access to two public beaches and one private along Lake Michigan. “The beaches are beautiful and underdeveloped,” says Green. “You have large stretches of sand in each direction, and it doesn’t get very crowded.” The beach at Hagar Park is the largest and most frequented. To get to the beach from the parking lot, visitors have to go down a steep staircase. The beach at Roadside Park offers a more intimate setting as there are very few parking spaces. Those who join the Lake Michigan Beach Association have access to the community’s clubhouse and a private half-mile stretch of beach. A gazebo sits at the top of the staircase overlooking the water.DiMaggio's is a community staple and one of two restaurants
Michigan Highway 63, known simply as M-63, is a lightly traveled thoroughfare with a few businesses. Of the neighborhood's two restaurants, DiMaggio’s has been serving Lake Michigan Beach the longest, since 1957. It’s become a community staple for pizza and other Italian-American dishes. Lake Michigan Ice Cream and Eatery opened in 2024, offering ice cream, pizza and other comfort foods between April and November, before closing for the winter. Dollar General is the community’s one place to shop for essentials, while other retailers can be found in Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and South Haven.Coloma Community School District offers dual enrollment at high school
Kindergarten through third-grade students attend Coloma Elementary School, which receives a C-plus grade from Niche. C-rated Coloma Intermediate serves fourth and fifth-grade students. They’ll go on to Coloma Junior High, also rated a C. Coloma High receives a B and is ranked the sixth-best college prep high school of 16 in Berrien County. According to GreatSchools, about 11% of students take dual enrollment courses through Lake Michigan College.Halfway between Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and South Haven
There’s no public transportation, so locals will drive to get around. Both M-63 and Interstate 196 lead 10 to 15 minutes to Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and South Haven. South Bend International Airport is also about 40 minutes away.
