Fast growing town with new schools

Just 14 miles north of Shreveport, Benton is a town with a booming population. “It’s by far the fastest growing town in the entire area,” says Mindy Wardlaw, who has over 20 years of real estate experience with Pinnacle Realty Advisors. “The main push is the schools and the outdoor recreation driving people to Benton.” Benton is home to a pair of lakes and is bordered by the Red River to the west. The water features are popular spots for fishing and swimming. There is also a good deal of green space in the area. Benton is further out than most Shreveport suburbs, giving it a bit of a rural feel, but the town has all the conveniences of most suburbs. Highway access makes it easy to get to Shreveport or other surrounding areas in a matter of minutes. The schools are some of the newest in the highly-rated Bossier Parish district, and many of the homes are new construction.

Newer homes, modern builds

The median price for a single-family home in Benton is just over $300,000. Older homes tend to be brick, ranch-style builds, while newer houses are larger Craftsman houses. “The prices are slightly higher than the surrounding areas, but that is to be expected with the amount of people rushing in,” says Wardlaw. Newer subdivisions in Benton feature larger homes on close-together lots. The houses sit on quiet streets with minimal traffic and have driveways and garages. Green lawns and sidewalks make it a pet-friendly environment. The older homes are smaller but have more land and a greater sense of privacy.

New and updated schools

The local district is Bossier Parish Public Schools, and kids begin at Benton Elementary, which holds an A-minus rating on Niche. “The schools are newer and more updated than most in the area,” says Wardlaw. Benton Elementary was also rated as being the No. 5 public elementary school in the Shreveport area. Next, students head to Benton Middle before Benton High. Both schools received A-minus grades from Niche and were ranked as the No. 2 school in the district for their respective levels. Niche also praised Benton High’s teachers and athletics department. The Benton Branch of the Bossier Parish Libraries holds daily activities for learners of all ages.

Swimming on the lake

Water features are prevalent all over Benton, and none are bigger than Cypress Bayou Reservoir. The Cypress Black Bayou Recreation Area is a popular spot for locals all year round. While the lake is the main draw, with swimming and boating, the area also has miles of nature trails and camping areas. During the summer months, residents can cool off in the waters of the Clear Lake. The Red River is a popular spot for anglers to launch their boats and go fishing. For an indoor workout, Anytime Fitness has locals covered.

From donuts to Trejo's

Yummy Donuts is the local breakfast spot with plenty of pastry options. Trejo’s Mexican is a favorite among Benton residents, with daily lunch specials and a fun atmosphere. The large mural of a jumbo shrimp on the outside of Sam’s Southern Eatery serves as a call to hungry diners in Benton. Sam’s is a casual joint that serves up fried seafood and other Cajun favorites, while CJ’s Grub Shack is known for fried catfish and charbroiled burgers.

Brookshire’s is the local grocery store located right off Benton Road. Residents can also visit Willow Chute Grocery for locally-grown produce and other goods. There is a Walmart Supercenter off Interstate 49 and Sunshine Health Foods off Interstate 220. For retail options, residents can hit the Louisiana Boardwalk Outlets just three miles south on Interstate 20. The outlet mall has local boutiques and nationally recognized shops.

SporTran or highways

The SporTran Bus System serves the Benton area, and there are plenty of stops along Benton Road. Many commuters choose to drive, and the many highways in the area make it an easy route. “People in Benton can be in downtown or Barksdale Airforce Base in a matter of minutes,” says Wardlaw. Benton is near Interstates 20 and 220, as well as Highway 3.
