Lakeside living and large lots
North Point/Mallard Lakes is a community in northwestern Winston-Salem offering large lots that back into groves of mature trees. Houses right off the Mallard Lakes enjoy waterside views on a lake maintained by an HOA. "There's a lot of forests up there, and some homes are on a septic system, which ensures at least half an acre of land," explains Robert Wiley, a Broker at Keller Williams Realty with 20 years of experience in the Winston-Salem area. "A lot of people that grew up in the north side of Winston-Salem like to stay in the area; they don't consider moving anywhere else in the city."
From mid-century to modern homes
Mid-century ranch-style homes start at $200,000 for properties with half an acre or more. Modern ranch-style homes go for $300,000, and contemporary split-level homes with lakeside views and personal docks go for closer to $400,000. There aren't many sidewalks in the area, but the streets are quiet, so residents feel safe walking around. Mature trees shade wide green lawns, and lakeside homes often get visits from roaming packs of Canadian geese.

The Northern Beltway project
Reynolda Road offers a straight shot into downtown Winston-Salem, about 7 miles away, but getting anywhere else is a bit more inconvenient. "If you're coming in from somewhere like Kernersville, we call it Winston-Salem times two," Wiley says. "First, you have to get into the city, then you have to get up to the north side." Fortunately, the city is adding a beltway that will wrap around Winston-Salem's north half, offering access to major roads that skip over downtown entirely. The eastern side is already complete, but the western half is expected to stretch into 2030. "The beltway can already save ten minutes on traffic time, so when it's finally complete — it'll be great," Wiley says. For longer trips, the Piedmont Triad International Airport is relatively small but still has options for abroad and domestic travel.
