Planned subdivisions surround Village Centre stores and restaurants

Off U.S. Highway 26 within the Portland Metropolitan area lies Bethany, a neighborhood made up of gridded lots and brand-new subdivisions. Here, 19th-century factories, blacksmith shops, and single-room doctor’s offices from the height of Oregon’s pioneering days have been replaced by big box retailers along the highway and sushi stops in Bethany Village Centre. According to Dirk Hmura, who has amassed over 20 years of real estate experience and lived in Bethany for 15 years, the neighborhood has been the site of much change in recent decades.
“It was more farm country when I was in high school,” he says, adding, “I’ve seen thousands upon thousands of new construction projects.” In 2002, the neighborhood was designated an urban growth area. The proximity of Nike’s World Headquarters, an Intel corporate office and top-rated public schools have all made Bethany attractive to commuters and young families. “Bethany Village always has events, says Hmura, pointing to a summer concert series and holiday parks. “We’re very community-driven.” Kids play in the Village Centre’s water fountain on hot summer days and head to Cup & Cone Ice Cream and Boba for a cold treat. Families explore the extensive West Side Trail System. Although Bethany is surrounded by wildlife, residents still have easy access to city conveniences in Downtown Portland just 10 miles away.

Condominiums, townhomes and million-dollar single-family houses

Prospective buyers looking to put down roots here will find condo units, townhomes and brand-new single-family traditional homes in North Bethany subdivisions. One-bedroom units hover around $300,000, and some residents enjoy views of Cooper and Bull Mountain to the south. Meanwhile, three-bedroom townhomes in subdivisions like Bethany Crossing can sell for close to $500,000, and most include attached one-car garages. Single-family craftsman-style bungalows with front porches or triangular porticos range between S0 and $700,000. On the highest end of the spectrum in Bethany, contemporary, Tudor-inspired and traditional single-family homes in subdivisions like Arbor Heights are listed between $900,000 and well over $1 million. Homes sit on compact lots, with the average size falling around 6,000 square feet, but sidewalks are wide enough for a side-by-side stroll, bike riding lessons or walking the dog.

CTE opportunities, college-level courses and peer tutoring at Sunset High School

Public schools in Bethany include Jacob Wismer Elementary, Stoller Middle and Sunset High, all of which received an A from the educational review site, Niche. At Sunset High, some students take advantage of off-campus Career and Technical Education programs. Seniors enrolled in the advanced health careers pathway, for instance, are given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in veterinary medicine, physical and occupational therapy, sports medicine and more. Portland Community College Rock Creek is just 3 miles from the Village Centre, and juniors and seniors enrolled in the Early College High School Program travel to the campus for college-level learning opportunities. Sunset high schoolers interested in working as peer tutors at Terra Linda Elementary — another A-rated Beaverton public school — make the 1-mile trip to assist teachers and work one-on-one with younger students.

Bethany Village Centre and big box retailers off of Highway 26

Bethany Village Centre off Northwest Laidlaw Road has become a premiere shopping destination in the Portland area, attracting locals with micro restaurants, bakeries and a central water fountain surrounded by a community amphitheater. “Bethany Village is the heart of Bethany,” says Hmura. “People will pick up food at the micro restaurants — which include Indian food, Mexican food and more and can sit outside.” Bethany’s Table, advertised as “A European-style bistro,” offers a top-tier menu complete with short rib ragu, fresh salmon with apple cider lentils and crab pasta with leeks. There’s also Bethany’s Public House, which serves up pub-style comfort food nearby. Locals like to sit at the bar with a draft beer and cheer on the Portland Trailblazers and Winterhawks. Grocery lists are ticked off at QFC, and more shopping options can always be found alongside Highway 26 in Hillsboro. There’s a Target, Nordstrom Rack and a long list of grocery options like Walmart Neighborhood Market, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

Community events in Bethany Village Centre, an outdoor amphitheater and local museums

Bethany Village Centre hosts a regular calendar of events; at the annual Easter egg hunt, kids stop by local businesses for goodies and finish out the day with games and crafting tables at the Bethany Athletic Club. There’s also the Bethany Spring Market, where dozens of local artisans, farmers and restaurants set up shop underneath tents on a Thursday afternoon in May. Vendors can also sell their wares during the neighborhood’s summer concert series or during Bethany’s Oktoberfest, where musicians perform in dirndls and lederhosen and residents snack on bratwurst. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, head to the outdoor amphitheater in the Village Centre for the tree-lighting ceremony, which includes performances from local children’s choirs. Other local destinations include the Play Street Children’s Museum, which requires reservations in advance. Learn about regional history at the Five Oaks Museum, and there’s also the Lovegood Performing Arts Company where kids can attend summer, winter and spring break camps. Options like the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japanese Gardens and the Pittock Mansion Museum are approximately 9 miles — or just about 20 minutes — from Bethany Village Centre along U.S. Highway 26.

Hiking trails, a pirate-themed playground and golf options

Much of the land surrounding Bethany is still largely rural, and subdivisions are bordered by forests and hiking trails. To the east is the Bannister Creek Greenway, where locals can spot signs of beavers (teeth marks on the bark and dams in the creek). Forest Park spans over 5,000 acres and features 30 miles worth of hiking and mountain biking routes. Closer to town there’s the aptly-named Pirate Park, which includes a pirate-themed playground accessible via the Rock Creek Trail. “When my kids were growing up here we went to Pirate Park,” says Hmura, adding, “Every family has been there with their kids” and explaining that it’s the type of place where seeing a familiar face is likely. The Claremont Golf Club sits to the south and includes a nine-hole course — locals will sometimes go through the course twice for a par-72 round of 18. There are daily rates, but some prefer investing in annual pass memberships. Rock Creek Country Club, established in the 1950s, is also nearby and includes a public driving range, a regular tournament schedule and private golf lessons. On warm days, kids can also play in the water fountain in Bethany Village.
