A Bethesda suburb, Glenwood is at the heart of all the action, with homes as luxurious as its amenities.
Walking distance from shopping, a bustling dining scene, public transit and parks, Glenwood treats residents to an upscale lifestyle rich in amenities within blocks of downtown Bethesda. It’s also home to some of the best schools in the state. “Whether you’re a foodie, like the nightlife and bars, are a big shopper or are looking for an active arts and culture scene, we have it here,” says Aynae Simmons, Communications Coordinator for Visit Montgomery, Maryland. The neighborhood offers single-family, stately colonials, charming Cape Cods, ranch-style homes, split-levels, luxurious estates and townhouses. Most homes were built in the 1960s, ranging from $840,000 to $2 million. Higher-end homes are predominantly in the Glenbrook Knolls subdivision, and three- and four-bedroom town houses can be found in Camelot Mews. Homes boast impressive backyards with stone decks, custom swimming pools and hot tubs. Lots are expansive, with the average size starting at 72,000 square feet up to nearly 6 acres of lush green space. Residents take pride in maintaining their yards, which are beautifully landscaped with paved patios accented by flowering trees. Spacious garages allow for multiple cars, storage or a workshop, and covered porches overlooking fenced-in yards are prime for entertaining or gardening. With quick access to Interstate 495, residents can easily get to Walter Reed Hospital and NIH Clinical Center, one of the largest employers with nearly 2,000 employees. Glenwood residents can also quickly commute to work or access downtown Bethesda in less than 2 miles with the neighborhood Medical Center metro station or a bus stop via the Bethesda Circulator Bus, both within walking distance. “With our access to the metro, you can easily get to Washington, and people enjoy having that convenience,” Simmons says.
Served by Montgomery County Public Schools, students attend Bradley Hills Elementary, Thomas W. Pyle Middle and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. Both Bradley Hills and Thomas W. Pyle earned an overall A on Niche. The elementary school offers an annual science fair, a Dungeons and Dragons club and after-school enrichment programs through Baroody Camps. Bethesda-Chevy Chase earned an overall A-plus on Niche and boasts 80 classrooms with a media production facility, greenhouse, cybercafé and language lab. The school also offers field hockey, football, a social justice book club and robotics team.
Enjoy a picnic in the gazebo at Greenwich Neighborhood Park, work on your tennis game or let the kids play. And at Battery Lane Urban Park, you can work out at one of the many fitness stations, shoot hoops, or hop on the 4-mile Bethesda Trolley Trail for a hike or bike ride, which passes through this park and links Bethesda with North Bethesda. You can also rent a plot for your veggies and plant at the park’s community garden at Bradley Park. Stroll the picturesque McCrillis Gardens just 2 miles away, a secret garden hidden in the heart of Bethesda. With shaded woodland paths, you can admire the azalea gardens or step back in time in the property’s stone manor house.
Most dining and retail options are off Old Georgetown Road or Maryland Route 355, just a mile away in Woodmont Triangle. “It ranges from local mom and pops to upscale dining,” says Simmons. “It’s very culturally diverse, and you’ll find a wide variety of different cuisines. “Then there’s Bethesda Row, which is a huge shopping destination.” At Woodmont Triangle, you’ll find some of the city’s best restaurants, like Anthony's Coal-Fired Pizza and Wings, which serves up charred-crust pies, subs and other Italian classics. Also, in this bustling hub is Medium Rare, known for its steak frites and double chocolate fudge layer cake. Just a mile away, you’ll find grocery store Harris Teeter, as well as Target, a pet store and more retail. Come here for events and festivals year-round, like the Bethesda Streetery, Winter Wonderland, and the popular Taste of Bethesda Festival. “it’s an annual event showcasing the best food Bethesda has to offer, and it’s extremely popular,” Simmons says.
