Charming Cape Cods and multifamily dwellings
Single-family homes are generally from the early 20th century. "We have all different types of homes," Woods says. "The majority are older Capes that have been renovated, but we have some new construction." Most homes are clustered close together along narrow streets lined with sidewalks and parked cars; typical features include front porches, short driveways and horizontal siding — wood or vinyl — often shaded in muted pastels like powder blue, seafoam and buttercream. Prices for these homes generally range from $500,000 to $900,000, depending on a home's size and renovation needs. The median home price here is $725,000, compared to $825,000 in Boston. "Our prices are high, but Boston is more expensive," Woods says. Most residents here are renters, though, which creates opportunities for property investors. Multifamily homes, including duplexes, townhomes and condo or apartment buildings, are common and range from $400,000 to $1 million, depending on the number of units.Beaches, parks and green spaces
Balch Park features the historic, wood-frame John Balch House, built in 1679 and open for guided tours. The park also offers a playground and several sports, including street hockey, soccer and basketball. At Shoe Pond, anglers can cast lines for largemouth bass, yellow perch and black crappie. Golfers may hit the links at the public Beverly Golf Club, which includes an 18-hole course and a tennis facility. Two miles away, the 16-acre David S. Lynch Memorial Park is a Beverly staple. "Lynch Park is the big go-to," Woods says. "It has two beaches and a beautiful rose garden." With dozens of flowers and picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Lynch Park Rose Garden is ideal for an evening stroll to watch the sunset. Woodbury Beach is the largest of the park's two beaches and a popular spot for volleyball and kayaking. "We have a great parks and recreation department," Woods says.Dual-enrollment opportunities at Beverly High
Gloucester Crossing is part of Beverly Public Schools, which Niche rates B-plus overall. Local kids may start at the B-plus-rated Ayers Ryal Side Elementary before moving to the B-rated Beverly Middle. Beverly High earns a B-plus and offers dual-enrollment courses for credit at North Shore Community College.Summer fun at Lynch Park
There are community events throughout the year at Lynch Park. "During the summer, they will have concerts, and a lot of people will set up lawn chairs and picnics there," Woods says. In August, Beverly Homecoming is a multiday festival celebrating the community. Events include fireworks, music and beloved traditions like LobsterFest, which focuses on seafood, games, music and a kids' costume contest. "It draws hundreds of people every year," Woods says. "All types of music are going on — it's an all-day event."Getting around from Gloucester Crossing
Gloucester Crossing is walkable and bikeable, and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority buses also stop in the neighborhood. Cabot and Rantoul streets are the main downtown thoroughfares, but state Route 62 connects to Boston. Commuters may also take a train into Boston from Montserrat Station, less than a mile away. Beverly Hospital is just outside the neighborhood, and Boston Logan International Airport is 21 miles away.Dozens of restaurants in downtown Beverly
"Downtown's been growing," Woods says. "There are a lot of new restaurants that have popped up." Stephy's Kitchen is a laid-back diner that serves homestyle brunch fare, including fluffy blueberry pancakes and cinnamon French toast. Flip the Bird is a fast-casual lunch spot serving buttermilk-fried chicken, honey butter biscuits and homemade slaw. For groceries, there's a Stop & Shop. About a mile away, Rantoul Street is lined with bars, cafes and locally owned restaurants with flavors from around the world, including Chinese, Dominican and Indian. Takumi Ramen is a cozy highlight with an authentic Japanese menu. For after dinner, Jacob's Corner is a penny-tiled pub across the street that serves Guinness on draft. There are also a handful of mom-and-pop shops; residents can dig for vinyl at Bridge Nine Records, treasure hunt at Beverly Bootstraps Thrift Shop and find vintage clothing at Second Rodeo Vintage. "And we have three or four breweries now," Woods says. "Twice a year, they have the Beverly Beer Mile, where you go from brewery to brewery."
