Accessibility and connection west of Downtown Beverly

Walkability and a close-knit community define Ryal Side, an affluent pocket of Beverly, Massachusetts, embedded along the waterside just minutes from the city’s vibrant downtown district. “Ryal Side is a family-friendly community with a nice, neighborly feel,” says Realtor and Ryal Side resident Betsy Woods of Leading Edge Real Estate, adding that the welcoming atmosphere and convenient location draw homebuyers to the suburb. “The proximity to the beaches, highways and the train station make it an ideal place to live.” The Beverly train station is just across Bass River to the east and commuters enjoy access to major thoroughfares like Interstate 95, both providing connections to Boston, about 22 miles south. Additionally, access to strong schools and recreational spaces further encourage a family-centric environment.

New England-style homes on modest lots

Modest vernacular homes sit on proportioned lots and tree-lined streets, creating a suburban feel. “Ryal Side has predominantly Cape Cods and smaller homes,” Woods says, adding that many are tucked on waterfront properties. “A lot of cottages have been converted to beautiful homes along the water.” New England architectural styles are most common, scattered alongside bungalows and Neo-Victorian homes that blend classic Queen Anne facades with contemporary elements. Prices for single-family homes start at $425,000 and can fetch up to $1.25 million for stout waterfront residences. Townhouses typically range between $580,000 and $740,000. Woods says that while Ryal Side is affluent, its prices remain reasonable compared to surrounding neighborhoods. “It’s not the most expensive part of town, but it’s still very desirable,” she says.

Outdoor recreation at nearby pocket parks including Obear Park

Pocket parks ranging in size are scattered across Ryal Side, providing outdoor space and recreational opportunities for locals. “We have beautiful parks and lots of green space,” Woods says, noting that many tracts feature sports courts and other amenities. Obear Park is a popular destination for its waterside views and walkways, and the park also offers a playground and various athletic courts, including hybrid pickleball and tennis courts, a baseball diamond and a basketball court. Herlihy Park and Femino Park offer additional sporting amenities. Golfers may delight in the neighborhood’s proximity to the private course at Kerwood Country Club, just south of the neighborhood, and the public amenities at Beverly Golf & Tennis Club north of Ryal Side.

Strong education in Beverly Public Schools

Students are served by Beverly Public Schools, which earns a B-plus from Niche. They may begin their education at Ayers Ryal Side Elementary, a B-plus school serving kindergarten through fourth grade. Beverly Middle School teaches fifth through eighth grades and receives a B grade. Home of the Panthers, Beverly High School gets a B-plus and offers a strong athletics program, with teams including sailing, ice hockey, football and more. Students may also attend Bishop Fenwick High School, a B-plus-rated private Catholic high school. Other highly rated private and faith-based education options are also available.

Fourth of July celebrations at Obear Park

The Ryal Side Civic Association is responsible for many of the neighborhood’s events and social gatherings, which include seasonal favorites like an Easter egg hunt in the spring. “The big one is the Fourth of July Parade,” Woods says. “The whole community shows up for it. Everyone comes out to watch the parade, which goes down Bridge Street and ends at Obear Park with a big family fest.” The celebration consists of food trucks and kid-friendly activities like face painting, and the night tops off with fireworks.

Connections to Boston by car or train

Woods emphasizes that convenience and proximity to transportation options make Ryal Side a sought-after residence for homebuyers. Route 62, or Elliot Street, links to State Route 128, putting residents close to Interstate 95. This major route connects commuters to Boston, about 22 miles south, though the drive may take up to an hour with traffic. Commuters may also take the Newbury/Rockport train line south into Boston. The line serves the Beverly Train Station in Downtown Beverly, which is within walking distance from Ryal Side. The Boston Logan International Airport is the closest to Beverly, about 20 miles away.

Walkability to shopping and dining in Downtown Beverly

Elliot Street runs through Ryal Side to the north and is one of the neighborhood’s main routes. Chain establishments like Starbuck’s and grocery options like Stop & Shop are located on the street, offering convenient stops close to home. The Cummings Center’s business campus is also situated along Elliot Street, crowded with a slew of services and professionals, from travel agents to attorneys and more.

Walkability to Downtown’s collection of eclectic stores and restaurants is also a draw for Ryal Side residents, as Bridge Street connects directly to the downtown district. Popular establishments line Rantoul and Cabot Street, ranging from laidback breweries like Old Planters Brewing Company to elevated New American spaces like Passport Restaurant. Locally owned stores, boutiques and gift shops are sprinkled in between dining joints. Locals can shop at additional big-box stores and brand names at the Northshore Mall, 4 miles south of Ryal Side.
