Semiahmoo offers luxurious outdoor living in northwest Washington
The Semiahmoo Peninsula is a scenic, forested wilderness in northwest Washington, looking across the Semiahmoo Bay to British Columbia, Canada. In the 1980s, developers saw the sweeping waterfront and white-capped mountain backdrop and built the Semiahmoo Resort, Golf & Spa and community. "People come here seeking a nice second home. They're attracted to the water and mountain views," says Ryan Kent Smith, a lifelong resident of the area and managing broker of Five Star Properties Group with John L. Scott Real Estate. Homes are built on the peninsula's perimeter with lots of wooded privacy. Residents are within walking distance of the beach and within a short drive or bike ride of Semiahmoo Resort's spa, waterfront restaurants and Arnold Palmer-designed golf course. "There's a rustic luxury here," Smith says. "You have people who enjoy the nice architecture and reading on the beach, and people with kayaks on their hitch heading to the boat ramp."
Woodland and waterfront scenery define Semiahmoo's architecture
Semiahmoo's high-end homes create the community's signature contrast of luxurious comfort and rugged Pacific Northwest wilderness. "I'd say it's an upscale community," Smith says. "You have select architecture, nice views and lots of privacy." Most homes are around the Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club, facing Drayton Harbor to the north. Meanwhile, Semiahmoo Drive offers more spacious, private living on Semiahmoo Bay. Homes display Craftsman and contemporary cabin architecture that blends with the surrounding fir trees. Options start with one-to-three-bedroom condos around the course and with water views near the main resort, ranging from $320,000 to $830,000. Luxurious beachfront units outside the main resort can cost $1.1 million to almost $2 million. Midsize-to-large single-family homes around the course range from $640,000 to just under $1 million. From $1 million and up to $3.2 million, luxurious waterfront mansions showcase stunning beachfront midcentury modern architecture with wood beams and panoramic windows.
Semiahmoo has scenic golf, boating and beaches
Residents summer in Semiahmoo to be outside as much as possible, whether that means lounging on the beach or utilizing the resort's amenities. "For people who live an adventurous lifestyle, there's so much to do," Smith says. "This whole area around the border is so sports oriented." Most residents can walk to a nearby beach. They can also access the beach and waterfront trails at Semiahmoo Park, just across the spit from the main resort. Kayaking is a popular way to explore the bay and take in the mountain scenery. Residents can utilize Semiahmoo Resort's pickleball courts and highly rated spa. It also has a marina in Drayton Bay, where boaters can set off on fishing trips and evening cruises. Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club is the other premier facility. It features an 18-hole, Arnold Palmer course that's open to members and guests at the resort.
Dine at the resort and stock up in nearby cities
Semiahmoo Resort provides the nearest restaurants. Packers Kitchen + Bar is a waterfront oyster bar in the main resort with panoramic views of the bay. Seaview Café is the other dining space in the main resort, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. After rounds, golfers eat at the Great Blue Heron Grill, which specializes in entrees made with seasonal Pacific Northwest ingredients. There's a small store and café at the main resort, but substantial shopping requires a longer drive. "People time their shopping trips to get everything before coming out here," Smith says. "They might stop at big stores like Costco in Bellingham or across the border." Bellingham is less than 30 miles south on Interstate 5, but there are closer shopping options in Blaine, just over 5 miles northeast, including grocery stores.
Blaine schools are a few miles away
Students on the peninsula go to school in Blaine, between 5 and 10 miles northeast of most homes. Kids start at Blaine Primary from kindergarten through second grade, which gets a B-minus rating from Niche. They then attend Blaine Elementary through fifth grade, which has a C. The journey continues at Blaine Middle, rated a C-plus. Blaine High rounds things out with a B. The district's Highly Capable Program fosters outstanding students with advanced coursework and projects.
Traveling to Semiahmoo from the U.S. or Canada
Semiahmoo residents come from both sides of the border. Vancouver, British Columbia, is the nearest major city, 40 miles north. Victoria is 80 miles southwest across the Salish Sea. Interstate 5 begins on Semiahmoo's east side and takes drivers to stateside cities like Bellingham. Seattle is 115 miles down I-5. For flights, residents might use Bellingham International Airport or Vancouver International Airport. There's a hospital located just across the border in White Rock, approximately 10 miles north. The closest U.S. hospital is in Bellingham.
