The city's first Black high school
Students can begin their education from Pre-K to the 8th grade at Washington Elementary School, which scores a C- on Niche. From there, they can attend C-plus-rated A.H. Parker High School, initially founded in 1900 as Birmingham's first public school for Black students. "The young people that come through these halls today are challenged with the awesome history that is behind them," says Barry McNealy, a social studies teacher at Parker High School. "They're taking that history into the future. And we pass it on, and we keep passing it on."19th Century architecture and baseball history
Originally built in the 1820s, the Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens is the oldest surviving 19th-century home in Birmingham and now serves as a museum house, providing a collection of antiques, artwork and architectural curiosities for visitors from the surrounding area and beyond. Sports fans can visit Rickwood Field, America's oldest baseball park, for tours, history lessons and even the occasional minor league game.Historic fixer-uppers near the Princeton Baptist Medical Center

Homes originally built in the 1920s and 30s are a common sight and bring a sense of historic charm. Lower-than-average listing prices come with a need for a fair amount of renovation. Narrow sidewalks connect the grid of residential zones to the Princeton Baptist Medical Center and beyond, encouraging a sense of community and walkability. A fully renovated Arts & Crafts home can reach the high-$200,000s.Fantastic art and football action
