Historic homes in need of renovation
Homes in Central Pratt tend toward “fixer-upper” status, most of which require extensive renovation and structural upgrades. Well-worn sidewalks line streets dotted with cheerfully painted historic homes alongside condemned houses with boards in their windows. However, classic buildings and lower real estate prices might be enough to entice bargain hunters, flippers and part-time amateur contractors with the promise of long-term projects or investment opportunities. Craftsman, split-level and ranch-style homes are common, with a significant percentage built in the 1920s, 30s, and 50s. New construction is rare, though community and neighborhood associations were pushing for newer homes in the Pratt City area at large. “They’ve been building a lot of improvements in that area,” says Minor. A bare-bones bungalow can start in the low $10,000s, while a move-in ready ranch-style home can reach the low $60,000s.Sports and shelter in Pratt City Park
First proposed after tornadoes in 2011 laid waste to many parts of Pratt City, Pratt City Park is a 15.82-acre stretch of greenery equipped with a football field, baseball diamond, basketball courts, playground, outdoor amphitheater and more. Walking trails circle the area, cutting through intricately landscaped flowerbeds and wide-open grass fields. Pratt City Park is also the home of three storm shelters, erected in 2016 to protect locals from future tornado seasons.Horticulture at Jackson-Olin High
Students in Central Pratt can begin their educations at South Hampton Elementary School, which serves K-8 and scores a C-minus on Niche. From there, they can enroll at Jackson-Olin High School, which also has a C-minus and features specialty programs in horticulture, cosmetology, culinary arts and business administration.Football and fishing
Every October at Logan Field, the Magic City Classic pits the football teams of Alabama A&M and Alabama State in a rivalry that’s been a local favorite since 1945. For something a little more laid-back, the East Lake Fishing Rodeo is an annual tradition that challenges anglers of all ages to catch the most brag-worthy catfish over the course of a single day in nearby East Lake.Easy access to downtown Birmingham
Located between Route 78 and Interstate 20, Central Pratt is a convenient drive to downtown Birmingham. “It’s 10 to 15 minutes tops,” says Betty Minor, a Birmingham native who’s served the community as a Realtor for over 30 years. “That’s a huge benefit to the area.” For trips further afield, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is located 10 miles east, on the other side of the Magic City itself. Public bus lines are available through Birmingham’s Max Transit service, with regular stops on Avenue F serviced roughly every half hour.Oxtail at Jasmine's Soul Food Cafe
While local amenities within Central Pratt are sparse, they are home to Jasmine’s Café, a proverbial “hole in the wall” take-out restaurant that offers soul food classics like oxtail, collard greens and hamburger steak. The fridge and pantry can be restocked at the Food Giant, located 3 miles south in Ensley Heights, while downtown Birmingham is a 5.5-mile drive east, providing access to the Birmingham Museum of Art, the McWane Science Center and much more.Important to know
Birmingham’s Jefferson County generally experiences the most tornadoes in Alabama during a given year, so weather safety is a constant concern. As a result, dozens of storm shelter sites have been erected throughout Birmingham, including three in Pratt City Park.
