A quiet residential suburb surrounded by entertainment
Birmingham’s bustling entertainment district brings a sense of excitement to the quiet hills of Crestwood South. “We can hear music coming from the concerts in Lakeview and the fireworks every Thursday night at Regions Field Stadium; some people might think that’s a bad thing, but not here, we love it,” Elizabeth Murray says. The neighborhood’s former president and current vice president, Murray, also serves as the greater Crestwood Community President. She says, “Our community’s made up of just two neighborhoods - Crestwood South and North; we’re divided by a four-lane state highway that we call Crestwood Boulevard.” The community park, swimming pool and a neighborhood shopping center sit on the north side, while the south side is purely residential, but this “doesn’t mean we don’t use those amenities – we all do,” Murray says. “Crestwood South really has everything you need and more, and it’s right next to downtown Birmingham, so you basically never have to get on the interstate; it’s really just a great place to live.”

Split levels and ranch-style homes built into a rocky hillside
John Fuller, a well-known Birmingham architect, began developing single-family homes in Crestwood South after World War II. Compared to Crestwood North’s older bungalows and craftsman homes, the houses here are “more mid-century modern and sort of 70s style,” Murray says. There are bulky split levels built into the rugged hillside and similar ranch-style homes with finished basements. “Most of our houses, unlike the north side, have all the nice modern things like built-in garages and more than one bathroom,” Murray says. “We were developed when sidewalks weren’t popular,” but wide roads and the new Clairmont Walking Trail make it easy to take evening strolls through the neighborhood. Like its northern neighbors, the listings in Crestwood South usually range between $300,000 and $475,000.

Weekly jazz concerts at True Story Brewing Company
The Shoppes of Crestwood “are across 78 on the north side of the community," Murray says. Once a lonesome gas station, The Filling Station Pizza Café and Bar has become a beloved community staple serving hand-tossed pizzas, wings and burgers. There’s also a local coffee shop next to an antique store and a little independent bookstore, too. Residents can grab a drink at Crestwood Tavern or stop by True Story Brewing Company for “the little jazz concerts every Friday night,” Murray adds. She says the new Crestwood Pharmacy “has an old-fashioned soda fountain and great milkshakes, too.” Aldi, Home Depot and several other national chains are located just up the road at the Crestwood Festival Center.

Locals love the new Clairmont Avenue Walking Trail
For a while, Crestwood South didn’t have a green space of its own, but this changed in the summer of 2019. “Since we don’t have sidewalks, we – as a community - had the idea of putting a paved sidewalk through the median on Clairmont Avenue,” Murray says. “We worked a long time for this, like 12 to 20 years – but we finally got it, and it’s been super successful.” “People really use the trail to run, walk, bike and walk their dogs,” she adds. Crestwood Park offers over 12 acres of green space across the highway in Crestwood North. Kids can bike across the street for youth football practice or head to the pool throughout the summer.
