Welcome to Druid Hills
Druid Hills rests in the rolling landscape that makes up the northern part of downtown Birmingham, and being near the city is a big highlight. "It's long overdue for being developed," says Willie Casey, a Realtor and Broker with Casey Bishop & Burroughs Realty who has worked in the area for 42 years. "I have high hopes for the neighborhood. It's on an upswing." In recent years, parts of Druid Hills have experienced new development to match the vibe of Uptown, the entertainment district of downtown Birmingham that features attractions such as the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center, Boutwell Auditorium and Birmingham Museum of Art. One recent development project is Protective Stadium, opened in the fall of 2021 as the new home venue of UAB Blazers college football. Another is City Walk BHAM, intended to create a communal destination and common area underneath the recently constructed Interstate 59 and Interstate 20 Central Business District bridges.

Updated historic homes and condos
Most homes in Druid Hills are older, with some built on the rolling hills that overlook the city. Some housing types include Craftsman, ranch and Tudor-style homes. On the neighborhood's south side, closer to Uptown, are primarily condominiums. Recent prices for homes range from $40,000 for an older, brick Craftsman-style house in need of renovations to $230,000 for an updated detached single-family home. "Now's the time for investors to buy in Druid Hills," says Casey. "I believe in another five years, it'll be like the ballpark, where it won't be about what's pricier; it'll be about what's available for sale—if there's anything to be sold. It's one of the best opportunities for investors in that area."

Plenty of activity along City Walk
Locals can take peaceful strolls through the gardens at Arthur Shores Park. There's also an enclosed play area for kids to run around, with a small playset for them to climb. Barker Park, located on a hill near Protective Stadium, has an enclosed soccer field, a basketball court and a playground. Long-term residents who have lived in the neighborhood for 30 or 40 years don't usually head over to Uptown, but this is likely to change as newer homebuyers come in since the entertainment district is just a short walk away. Even more outdoor fun is found along City Walk. On 24th Street North sits City Walk Park, a large playground designed to highlight Alabama's five physiographic regions with playground equipment. Other amenities along 9th Avenue North include pickleball courts, a roller-skating rink and skate park, and the Barkery, an enclosed dog park featuring an extensive obstacle course.
