A former mining town turned suburb

Birmingham’s history hides in plain sight in the unassuming neighborhood of East Brownville. Initially developed to house 19th-century iron miners, this community brought the magic to “The Magic City,” sparking Birmingham’s industrial development. One of the hardest-hit cities during the Great Depression, Birmingham bounced back seemingly overnight by providing iron during World War II. There’s a touch of nature to this neighborhood, with the popular Red Mountain Park bordering to the east. But despite these suburban flourishes, it’s important to remember that East Brownville is still close to the bustling amenities of downtown Birmingham, as Realtor Chelsea Musser with eXp Realty points out. “We have an international airport that’s incredibly easy to fly in and out of. Plus, it’s been renovated, so as of late, getting to the airport early and hanging out isn’t so bad.”

Modest home styles starting around $130k

Today, this former mining area is home to ranch, Craftsman, split-level and other modest home styles. The average cost of a single-family home in the metro area is a little over $300,000 – and well-kept homes in East Brownville can go for significantly less. For example, a remodeled three-bedroom midcentury ranch will sell at $130,000. Even if lacking a fence, homebuyers can expect to see a yard and mature shade trees. Lots are typically unadorned otherwise, save for a few ornamental bushes. And despite the lack of sidewalks, the quiet streets and cul-de-sacs make this area friendly to pedestrians.
