What started as a small mining town has become one of the more vibrant, up-and-coming neighborhoods in the city of Birmingham—Eastlake. This hip neighborhood, which neighbors other happening locations in Birmingham such as Avondale, Crestwood and Northside, offers its residents an opportunity to enjoy all of the city’s amenities while being a part of a small-but-growing community. “I really love Eastlake,” says Leanne Townsend, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty and longtime resident of the area. “It’s packed with charm, but has also seen a ton of revitalization in recent years thanks to the Amazon distribution center opening.” Couple these facts with its lower-than-average price point for the area, and the Eastlake neighborhood becomes an attractive option for those looking to live in Birmingham.

Eastlake’s own East 59 Café serves up smiles
Residents in the neighborhood have a variety of shopping and dining options, as the proximity to downtown Birmingham means that favorite spots are never far. Everyday grocery needs are satisfied by the local Piggly Wiggly, though frequent farmers markets make it possible to do much of your produce shopping locally. East 59 Café is a family-owned favorite right at the heart of the Eastlake neighborhood that offers coffee, breakfast, lunch, and more. Urbano Taco offers up authentic tacos and Mexican cuisine in a charming food truck setup, and nearby Irondale Café (made famous by the film “Fried Green Tomatoes”) serves up classic southern breakfast fare.

Weekly events celebrate the arts and local vendors
Local spirit and community pride is in high supply at Eastlake, with frequent local events bringing the community together. The East Lake Farmer’s Market meets at East Lake United Methodist on Saturday mornings with a variety of local craft vendors, musicians, baked goods, and produce. Located in the northern part of the neighborhood, East Village Arts is a collective of artists, musicians and patrons that hosts various events for the community—art exhibitions, workshops, concerts, free music lessons, and more.
Hip housing, affordable prices
Homes in the neighborhood primarily consist of craftsman and low-profile bungalows, lending the neighborhood a very laidback, hip sort of vibe. Also common are cottage and ranch style homes, with the occasional split-level rounding out the array of styles present. Prices in the neighborhood range from $78,000 to $300,000. Those looking for a 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom bungalow, for instance, can expect to pay around $125,000. “The houses are just so charming,” says Townsend. “And the fact you can get a charming craftsman for right around 100k is fantastic.”

Ruffner Mountain offers breathtaking views
East Lake Park boasts a public swimming pool, tennis courts, and a walking trail. Its vast, well-maintained lake is a prime fishing spot, and walking along the water’s edge is another popular route. Local hikers are just blocks away from Ruffner Mountain, a 1,038-acre nature preserve with several scenic hiking and biking trails. Apart from hiking, visitors can check out old mining sites, learn about the area in the nature center, and take in breathtaking mountain views at any number of designated lookout spots.

Central location meets revitalization
“Revitalization is happening all around the area,” says Townsend. “Eastlake is very likely to become the next hot spot in Birmingham thanks to its prime location.” With proximity to downtown Birmingham, local parks, and an array of artistic/community opportunities, Eastlake has plenty to offer those looking just outside the center of the action. Even so, it makes commuting easy as well—residents can easily access the interstate, and public transportation is available as well.
