Enon Ridge
Suburban Neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama
Jefferson County 35204
Historic craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes
Enon Ridge’s craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes were brand new during the mid-twentieth century when some of Birmingham’s most important Civil Rights leaders first moved in. Many of the houses look quite the same today, with weathered brick exteriors and original appliances. Reynolds says a few new construction homes are popping up throughout the neighborhood thanks to a partnership with the city and local non-profit, Bethel Ensley Action Task, Inc. (BEAT). “They’re really looking to grow the neighborhood by filling vacant lots that have just been sitting there; we’re hoping it’ll bring more growing families to Enon Ridge,” she says. The homes here typically list between $60,000 and $150,000, but the few new constructions cost closer to $225,000. Still, some quarter-acre abandoned lots are available for about $20,000.Enon Ridge Trail connects to the regional trail system
Enon Ridge Trail, previously known as the Dorothy Spears Greenway, is just over a mile-long tree-covered trail along the neighborhood’s west edge. In 2013, the gravel pathway officially opened as one of the first portions of the new Red Rock Regional Trail System. Residents can head northwest along the trail to visit 22 acres of open green space at East Thomas Park. After a sweaty summer stroll, the park's swimming pool makes for the perfect spot to cool off.A.H. Parker High was the Birmingham's first school for Black students
Enon Ridge students attend Birmingham City Schools. Kids can walk to Tuggle Elementary and Wilkerson Middle, both of which score a C-minus on Niche. Teenagers move on to the nearby A.H. Parker High. Receiving a solid C-rating, Parker began as Birmingham’s first school for Black students in 1900 and still advocates for equitable education through its Academy of Urban Educators program.A major intersection borders Enon Ridge
Enon Ridge sits immediately north of the Interstate 65 and Interstate 20 interchange. With short merge lanes and a long history of major accidents, this well-traveled and often congested crossroads is locally referred to as the ‘malfunction junction.’ Residents are just 1.5 miles from Downtown Birmingham and often avoid this traffic by following the regional trail system under the freeways.Finley Avenue is a nearby shopping and dining corridor
Some of Birmingham’s best, long-standing restaurants are within 2 miles of Enon Ridge. Residents can drive north to Finley Avenue and stop by the Alabama Farmer’s Market for farm fresh groceries and other artisanal products. Three doors down, Niki’s West serves the market’s homegrown okra, squash and other farm-fresh foods in a homey, cafeteria-style setting. The beloved restaurant first opened in 1957 and remains one of the largest meat-and-three diners in the city today.
