A buzzing urban pocket

Five Points South, initially settled as the Town of Highland, started as a late 19th-century streetcar suburb connected by the Elyton Land Company. Its name originates from the five-way intersection formed by 20th Street South, Magnolia Avenue and 11th Avenue, once a bustling streetcar intersection. Nowadays, it’s a vibrant restaurant and retail center buzzing with folks popping in stores, dining on patios and enjoying late-night drinks. “Five Corners South is in the middle of everything,” says Realtor Greg Graham of LAH Sotheby’s International Realty. Graham has sold homes in the area for over a decade. “And there’s all sorts of restaurants in the area.” Home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Five Points South is an active mix of college students, university professionals and families. This urban pocket’s distinct personality leaves locals calling it “a town within a city.”
