Rich history to explore at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
As part of its history, Fountain Heights is home to several well-preserved historic buildings, such as the Alabama Theatre and the Lyric Theatre. Built during the 1920s, they remain notable performing arts venues. The Alabama Theatre, which was built by Paramount Studios, continues to show films, while the Lyric Theatre frequently hosts live music events. The 16th Street Baptist Church served as a hub from which Martin Luther King Jr., Fred Shuttleworth and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference promoted civil rights for African Americans. The church was damaged in a bombing in 1963, but it was quickly rebuilt amid an outpouring of support. For more local history to explore, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute offers a museum experience devoted to this pivotal era of American history. For a more distant past, those interested in paleontology can visit the McWane Science Center. Housed in a former department store building, it’s home to a large collection of dinosaur fossils.
