Fountain Heights
Rich history to explore at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
As part of its history, Fountain Heights is home to several well-preserved historic buildings, such as the Alabama Theatre and the Lyric Theatre. Built during the 1920s, they remain notable performing arts venues. The Alabama Theatre, which was built by Paramount Studios, continues to show films, while the Lyric Theatre frequently hosts live music events. The 16th Street Baptist Church served as a hub from which Martin Luther King Jr., Fred Shuttleworth and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference promoted civil rights for African Americans. The church was damaged in a bombing in 1963, but it was quickly rebuilt amid an outpouring of support. For more local history to explore, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute offers a museum experience devoted to this pivotal era of American history. For a more distant past, those interested in paleontology can visit the McWane Science Center. Housed in a former department store building, it’s home to a large collection of dinosaur fossils.Older single-family homes and new apartments
The neighborhood offers a mix of properties, from early 20th-century bungalows and modern craftsman styles to new condos and apartments. Older homes in Fountain Heights may require renovations, but these properties usually sell for a lower price compared to the surrounding area. Single-family homes here typically sell for between $100,000 to $200,000, while new apartments and condos downtown go for between $200,000 to $400,000.Birmingham City School District
Birmingham City Schools serves the neighborhood’s students. Kids may start at Carrie A Tuggle Elementary School, which has a C-minus grade from Niche, before transitioning to Malachi Wilkerson Middle School, which also gets a C-minus and serves as the STEM academy for the school district. Students may then attend A.H. Parker High School with a C-plus grade.Pizitz Food Hall has something for everyone to eat
The closest grocery store is Publix Super Market at 20 Midtown. The Pizitz Food Hall includes several upscale restaurants with diverse menus, from soul food and pizza to pho, poke bowls and tacos.City Walk and Kelly Ingram Park provide outdoor recreation
Kelly Ingram Park is a storied park across the street from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. This four-acre park is filled with monuments dedicated to the Civil Rights movement. City Walk is a community space under the interstate overpass with a skatepark, playground equipment and a dog park. At the north end of the neighborhood is Fountain Heights Recreation Center with indoor meeting spaces and a basketball court.Close to interstates, bus stops and a train station
Fountain Heights is walkable and bikeable, but residents may still want to have a car to get to Birmingham’s farther amenities. Interstate 65 and Interstate 20 run through the neighborhood and provide an easy commute in and out of the city. Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority operates a daily bus service, with the closest stops being scattered along 19th Street North. There’s also a train station with Amtrak service and a Greyhound bus station along Morris Avenue.Important to Know
Interstate 65 runs directly next to the neighborhood homes, so the extra ambient traffic noise may be an issue for some.
