A historic, tight-knit community within walking distance of Downtown Birmingham
Graymont's grid-like streets rumble with excitement each fall as over 60,000 football fans make their way into Legion Field Stadium to watch Alabama A&M and Alabama State go head-to-head in the iconic 'Magic City Classic.' A competition between the state's two largest historically Black universities, this American football tradition is more than just a game. The Magic City Classic has been a celebration of Black culture since 1924 - bringing a sense of pride and unity to Graymont residents and the surrounding Birmingham neighborhoods. While this comradery epitomizes the community today, it has not always been this way. Graymont's east border, Center Street, was the site of numerous Ku Klux Klan bombings just 65 years ago during the Civil Rights Movement. These days, the historic bungalows and beloved stadium sit just 2 miles southwest of Downtown Birmingham's Civil Rights District. They stand not only as a testament to the community's resilience but also serve as a reminder of the brave residents who once pioneered the integration of Birmingham's neighborhoods.

Aging, modest bungalows and minimal traditional homes
Just over 375 pre-war bungalows and minimal traditional homes sit side-by-side on Graymont’s narrow, rectangular city blocks. West of the red-brick public housing units, these modest two-to-three-bedroom homes were built in the 1920s and ‘30s. There are a few with recently updated interiors, but most of the houses are aging fixer-uppers. They often feature large front porches supported by sturdy brick pillars and windows guarded by wrought-iron railings. Graymont has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 6 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. This overall Crime Score is driven by higher-than-average scores for violent crimes, even though Graymont has average scores for property crime. Many homes here are generational, so it can be difficult to find available listings, but when the pre-war residences do make it to market, they often range between $75,000 and $100,000.
