Graymont
Aging, modest bungalows and minimal traditional homes
Just over 375 pre-war bungalows and minimal traditional homes sit side-by-side on Graymont’s narrow, rectangular city blocks. West of the red-brick public housing units, these modest two-to-three-bedroom homes were built in the 1920s and ‘30s. There are a few with recently updated interiors, but most of the houses are aging fixer-uppers. They often feature large front porches supported by sturdy brick pillars and windows guarded by wrought-iron railings. Graymont has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 6 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. This overall Crime Score is driven by higher-than-average scores for violent crimes, even though Graymont has average scores for property crime. Many homes here are generational, so it can be difficult to find available listings, but when the pre-war residences do make it to market, they often range between $75,000 and $100,000.Bike or drive downtown from Graymont Avenue
Residents can bike or drive east on Graymont Avenue to arrive in Downtown Birmingham in fewer than 3 miles. On the bike ride over, locals pass under Interstate 65, which connects them to the City of Montgomery about 85 miles south. Following I-65 north, residents can quickly hop on Interstate 20 and head west to cheer on the Crimson Tide at Bryant-Denny Stadium.New improvements at Washington K-8 School
Neighborhood kids attend Birmingham City Schools. Kindergarteners can begin at Booker T. Washington K-8 School and move to A.H. Parker High. Washington scores a C-minus on Niche, and Parker receives a C-plus. In 2019, Washington was one of Birmingham's 15 elementary schools to receive funding from the state's multi-million dollar Turnaround Schools Initiative. This new project was launched to provide the 'failing' schools with additional resources and support. By 2023, Washington had become one of four schools to make it off the 'failing' schools list.Grab a drink with neighbors on 3rd Avenue
Residents can follow narrow, riddled sidewalks to 3rd Avenue, grab a drink with neighbors at local bars or swing by the butcher shop for fresh-sliced meats. After a long week, downtown commuters return home to Bravo Bar & Grill to decompress and enjoy a laid-back night filled with great music, cold beer and lifelong friends. The Prive sits only a bit further down the road, serving crispy Philly cheesesteaks until the wee hours of the morning. Further north, residents can stop by Graymont Meat & Food Mart and head down the road to find household essentials at Family Dollar. The Smithfield Library hosts weekly activities for all ages
Graymont doesn't have parks, but residents can bike to the Smithfield Library in less than a mile. Neighbors can spend hours exploring its rows of packed bookshelves or join the community book club to connect with fellow bookworms in the area. Kids gather at the library every Monday afternoon for coloring activities and return with their parents for weekly game nights on Friday evenings. For some fresh air, locals can drive just 2 miles east to walk along the paved trails at Railroad Park.
