Historic charm in Highland Park
Still postcard-ready after hundreds of years, Highland Park has maintained its stately residences and sense of elevated suburban living for generations. Initially developed in the 1880s, Highland Park started as a single boulevard, Highland Avenue, lined with 19th and 20th-century mansions. With five historic districts, Highland Park strives to preserve its original architectural significance and timeless character. Today, the residents of one of Birmingham's oldest neighborhoods enjoy the fruits of heirloom landscaping, terraced yards, scenic views and winding roads that harken back to the early days of the automobile. "It's got that old character and feel with all the conveniences of city life," says Jeff Musser, who co-owns Southern State Realty Partners with his wife, Chelsea Musser. "It's full of historic homes, but downtown is only minutes away." Downtown Birmingham is about three miles away, and residents can access the city's major employers like the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Regions Financial Corp.

Stroll amid tree-lined streets
Carved from the foothills of Red Mountain, Highland Park is the site of three city parks created from natural ravines—Caldwell, Rushton and Rhodes—that continue to serve the neighborhood today. "It's very walkable," adds Musser. Wide, tree-lined sidewalks make Highland Park pedestrian- and dog-friendly, and residents are often seen leisurely walking with their human and canine companions. Highland Park is just off Interstate 280, making commuting easy. Several city bus stops are within the neighborhood, and Amtrak and Greyhound Bus stations are within two miles.

Tee off at Alabama's oldest golf course
Highland Park residents can walk to one of the neighborhood's three historic parks, golf course or tennis center. Caldwell Park is a little less than three acres, with an outdoor stage that is often the location of events, performances and concerts. Rhodes Park has more than three acres of green space and features one-of-a-kind hardscapes—picturesque monuments, mosaics and steps constructed out of stone, brick and concrete. Rhodes Park is a popular place for people to walk and play with their dogs, though it's not officially a dog park. It's also home to the annual Do Dah Day pet parade, a music festival and fundraiser that has taken place every spring since 1979. Rushton Park is more than four acres of green space and includes the Highland Park Community Garden, which provides space for residents to grow food and flowers. A lottery takes place each spring to determine who receives a garden plot for the upcoming growing season. Rushton Park has many stairs and paved paths in addition to a basketball hoop located at the south end of the park.
The Highland Park Golf Course is off Highland Avenue in the neighborhood's east end. "Highland Park Golf Course is one of the best in the state," says Musser. It's also Alabama's oldest golf course, established in 1903. The Highland Park Tennis Center is next to the golf course, and it includes a clubhouse and pro shop. The Highland Park Racquet Club offers private and group lessons on ten clay courts and two hard courts.

Dine at local gems
Groceries, shopping and restaurants are all close by. "Rojo is a local Mexican restaurant," says Musser. "It's a community mainstay—super popular." Another popular spot is O'Henry's Coffee, where patrons stop for coffee, conversation and Conecuh sausage biscuits. Bottega sits in the heart of the neighborhood, serving James Beard award-winning dishes. Meanwhile, locals can grab some wine and charcuterie at Freddy's and pick up their weekly groceries at the area Piggly Wiggly.
