Jones Valley
Getting around
Jones Valley residents aren’t very far from U.S. Highway 11, also known as Bessemer Road, which makes commutes to other areas of the city simple. Several MAX Transit bus stops are scattered throughout the neighborhood for convenient transportation around town. “You’re close to many of the popular parts of town,” says Wil Cushman, Development and Communications Manager of local nonprofit Jones Valley Teaching Farm. “Downtown is a quick drive away, but you kind of avoid the bustle of the city.”Old homes that tell a story
Craftsman-style homes dominate Jones Valley, many dating back to the 1920s through the 1950s. Minimal-traditional and prairie-style homes are also common in the area. “Homes are generally pretty old, and you can trace that architecture back to Birmingham’s steel boom,” says Cushman. “There’s a lot of history in the area, and it tells the story of Birmingham, why we call it the Magic City.” Homes have spacious front yards and inviting porches, perfect for catching up with neighbors on morning walks or over a frosty pitcher of sweet, iced tea. Home prices in the area range from $19,000 to $240,000.Learning through growing
Children in the neighborhood attend Midfield Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of C-minus. Next, they attend Jones Valley Middle School, home of the Dragons, which boasts fantastic athletic programs and has an overall Niche grade of D-plus. Teenagers attend Wenonah High School, which offers career programs in the culinary arts, welding and cosmetology. The school has overall Niche grade of C-minus.Any student that attends a Birmingham Public School has access to Jones Valley Teaching Farm, a nonprofit whose mission is to empower youth to build better futures through learning. “We don’t just teach about food, we offer lessons in STEM and language arts, but we use growing and cooking as a foundation for those lessons,” explains Cushman. While the Jones Valley neighborhood doesn’t include any of the eight Birmingham schools where the nonprofit operates teaching farms, Jones Valley schools do take students on field trips to the teaching farm’s Downtown campus. Area children can also attend day camps at the teaching farm, all free of charge. The programs are also open to homeschooled children in the area.
Mountain trails and baseball fields
Wiggins Park offers various avenues for outdoor fun. Local youth leagues can practice their swing at the park’s baseball field, make a splash at the swimming pool, play friendly tennis games or shoot some hoops at the basketball court. The park also has walking paths and a playground for kids to enjoy. The Powderly Branch Library is right next to the park and serves the community with educational programs and community events. Nabors Branch River and Valley Creek run through the neighborhood, drawing out local anglers for a day of fishing. Meanwhile, breathtaking mountain views await visitors to Red Mountain Park, just south of Jones Valley. Visitors are transported back in time, as it’s one of the country’s largest industrial archaeological sites. Hikers can discover old landmarks and artifacts from the area’s mining past through scenic trails.Catch the big game at Overtime Grill
When locals get hungry, they head to Overtime Grill and Bar, which offers comfort chow, draft beer, pool tables and television screens showing the big game. When they need groceries, they head to Midtown Piggly Wiggly, a five-minute drive away. Jones Valley Teaching Farm also offers a Farm Stand at its Downtown campus, which provides fresh produce to the community free of charge.
