Residential streets branch into small cul-de-sac communities
Wide residential streets snake through Killough Springs, branching off into smaller cul-de-sac communities along the way. Throughout the 1950s to 1970s, developers built boxy split levels and traditional ranch-style homes into the neighborhood’s gently rolling hills. Low-pitched roofs with defined horizontal lines highlight the backyard backdrops of towering pines and sturdy oak trees. Over 80% of Killough Springs residents own their homes. Yolanda Dye, a local Realtor with 1st Class Real Estate Heritage adds, “Many of them are passed down through families for generations.” When the houses do go on the market, listings typically range between $125,000 and $175,000.Residents enjoy bankside fishing on Fivemile Creek
Winding through south Killough Springs, Fivemile Creek allows locals to canoe, kayak or just enjoy a lazy afternoon of bankside fishing. One of the best places to fish along the creek is located at the very far west end of the neighborhood, where the creek converges with a smaller tributary spring. Kids have plenty of room to play at Grayson Park. They can swing under the shade of tall hardwoods on the playground or play a pick-up game with friends on the fenced-in basketball courts. McNeal says, "We worked together to get the new basketball court a couple years ago and we're waiting on more park renovations to come."
Huffman High has an Academy of Architecture and Construction
Killough Springs public school students attend Birmingham City Schools. Preschoolers can begin at Huffman Academy and move on to Smith Middle School. Huffman High School students can enroll in the Academy of Architecture and Construction to prepare for future careers in carpentry, architectural design, plumbing, masonry and pipe fitting. All three schools score an overall C-minus on Niche.Downtown Birmingham is just 10 mile south
Killough Springs sits about 10 miles northeast of Downtown Birmingham. Its main throughway is Parkway East which forks into Highway 11 and Interstate 59 just two miles south. From here, residents can hop on one of the city’s fixed-route buses or drive about 10 miles south to Downtown Birmingham. Parkway East can get congested during rush hour, particularly around the junction, but Dye says, “In Killough Springs, you can maneuver around that traffic.” One of the ways commuters avoid traffic is by taking I-59 to Robison Drive and following it all the way back home.Parkway East has a grocery store, fast food chains and a few local businesses
Parkway East is the main shopping and dining corridor east of Killough Springs. National fast food chains, used and new car dealerships and a couple of churches line both sides of the highway. Directly across from the neighborhood, Parkway East Shopping Center is a small strip mall anchored by Meat Depot by Fresh Value and America’s Thrift Stores & Donation Center. Locals head to Meat Depot for all their grocery needs or drive just up the road to the Walmart Neighborhood Market. When they don’t feel like cooking at home, residents stop by the drive-thru at Costa’s Bar B Que to pick up a juicy rack of ribs or pulled pork sandwich.
